Always remember: everyone is just trying their best, with what they know and what they have. Even the people you badly disagree with. Spend time trying to understand people and things you disagree with. It will make it harder to hate.

It’s ok to agree to disagree, that’s what makes us all different 🫂

99% true but not always.

📮

“Humans can’t be trusted.”

Online discussion makes it easy to hate. People are far more respectful in person when you actually have to look someone else in the eye.

Definitely easier to hate people from behind a screen. I feel that in myself all the time.

Facebook, Twitter and Click Bait headlines Feed the hate - its creeping on here too…

Wisdom!

This is a nice perspective to have more empathy! 🤙

Also I would say motivation plays a big role as well how much this is true.

I think we shall have this assumption until it is proven to be wrong. Then we will have more empathy, but we won't get frustrated.

It's also important to remember that empathy and sympathy are not the same thing. One can empathize with someone who, from your perspective, is immoral. But that doesn't mean you therefore sympathize with them.

Good example is hostage negotiators. They're essentially professional empathizers. But that doesn't mean they think the hostage taker is a good person. Etc.

Correct! A third side in a work environment could be progress. For progress, you might need to select a solution. This does not mean you have to sympathize with the other. Although you shall come to a solution, that you both can agree too.

I’ve run into a couple of people here, thankfully not many, who insist that only their view is correct and everyone else is stupid and not worth listening to. To anyone with that attitude I ask, “Why are you even here?”

Definitely not a problem for me! I don't believe there is an objectively correct morality. Which permits curiosity of many different perspectives.

I think there is an "objectively correct morality" - treat others as you would have them treat you. Or to put it another way "my life is mine and your life is yours - neither of us have the right to impose anything on each other".

I believe all morality is ultimately subjective. I subscribe to a moral and ethical system, and I stand up for it pretty vigorously. But I don't believe metaphysical claims can be made about my ethics.

The root of understanding people is understanding ego, unconsciousness, consciousness, societal conditioning, and how one can become enslaved by ideology.

We are all ultimately somewhat enslaved by our environment. Complexity theorists call this path dependency. The belief that we exist apart from such constraints is not something I subscribe to.

Everyone but CSW

This is true for the most part, but it doesn’t undo the consequences of one’s actions. There are many people in unelected positions of authority “trying their best” and ruining the lives and families of innocent people.

This is the difference between empathy and sympathy. I can empathize with someone, even if I have no sympathy for them.

Often times, they are unaffected by those consequences. Leaves me no bandwidth to empathize with them or the root of their deeds. Energy is exhausted sympathizing/empathizing with the consequence bearers. Not exactly related to your example, but think of the promising young man who allegedly murdered 4 other young people in Idaho…

On the flip side, I find hate amusing - “resentment is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die” St. Augustine😃(what a rascal)

True.

Think I pretty much just had this heated discussion with my wife after a few days of stressful child sickness. You're right of course but reconciling differences of perspective is hard. My stubborn ass Bitcoiner "you can ignore reality but not the consequences of ignoring reality" line didn't go down as well as expected.

💯

I forget where I read about this philosophy about 3 years ago and I’ve been trying to imbibe this in my way of life ever since.

Makes it harder to hate as you said but also makes it easy to discover & pick up the good even from people you thought you’d dislike(you’d be surprised)!

This!!!
