WhatsApp does some crazy magic in video compression. I tried to compress a 15MB video and the lowest I got in desktop+server services is 3MB with terrible quality.

The 1-click WhatsApp process returns a 500k file and reasonable quality.

WhatsApp is any sort of censorship device?

probably...

worried about that scam

It’s own by Meta. Most communications in South America and part of Europe runs there :/ not very popular in the US

Don't know what is WhatsApp, some shitcoin?

It’s text messaging app. Like telegram but owned by Meta (Facebook)

Facebook is some sort of album book of people's face?

#[5] What is Facebook?

Please explain me, it sounds like scam

As long as you zap me 🫑

teach me how to zap

Which compression algorithms have you tried?

Just services around on the web + quick time + Mac apps for compression on the store. Nothing seems to get near it.

Have you tried H.265/HEVC?

Does it have hardware support in most mobile phones? Otherwise, it's not a good idea. :(

Not sure but data from 2018, show good support. By now it should be well supported.

What I can find online about it they use an optimized version of ffmpeg, but details are scarce.

Lots of places have trouble even opening WhatsApp videos (nostr.build doesn't take some of them). It could be something quite off the spec.

Have you tried AV1? Don't know much about it but streamers on YouTube seem to be incredibly psyched about it

As long as there is hardware encoding and decoding for AV1 in most phones, it could be fine to use it.

Yea what's app pretty dope for that kind of stuff

I always found it super efficient. Thanks for doing the investigation... Now to replicate it 🀭

Same thing with google photos, maybe they have some open source stuff that you can use. Also conversations(foss) the xmpp client, has a good compression system.

I believe WeChat has the same quality

Probably reducibg framerate and using power of two quadrature dithering in the wavelet space to reduce resolution

I just used AndroidVid on android to compress a 160Mb 4k video to 2.8MB... Not bad, check it out in my profile (amethyst said "failed to load video" when I was creating the note but it still worked)
