A better note taking app than Obsidian IMHO. End-to-end encryption. Free real-time sync across devices and platforms. Fully offline/local capable.

I saw there’s native apps on pretty much all platforms. Do you use them or you’re mostly on the web app?

I use local apps and built-in sync. Had no issues for 6+ years. The Monograph feature is incredibly useful too.

Just installed it on iPhone. Added a new note. Then I installed on graphene. Added 3 notes. Afterwards installed on Mac OS. Imported my obsidian vault. Then created an account. Signed in on all devices. Instant sync. So far so good. I’ll keep testing. See which one I prefer

I struggle to keep Obsidian basic enough - leveraging how nostr:nprofile1qyt8wumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnyd968gmewwp6kytcqyqd6dt7msdc6nw9p40sagq6kftw5xh4y8auq7y3mzn9f54dtf2q9k0v3xw4 uses it. I find NoteNook to be less powerful, but easier to handle. I bounce between the two. For iOS I use Auer Jot app my good friend wrote - super minimal but an excellent note taking app >> https://auerjot.com/

That app connects to notesnook or obsidian. I like the level of complexity of notesnook. I don’t use 95% of what’s available in obsidian

Same. I especially like that Notesnook is end-to-end encrypted whereas Obsidian is plain text (markdown) files. Knowing that I use them accordingly. I don't pay for Obsidian sync (or iCloud) so have not used it via iOS yet.

You don’t need obsidian sync on iOS. Just put your obsidian vault in a folder on iCloud. Point all your obsidian apps to that folder and you’re set.

I like the encrypted aspect. Not self hosted. I saw self hosting is alpha right now.

guess I have to use iCloud after all - will be a fun distraction for the morning. I went down a deep Templater plugin hole yesterday while trying to simplify my Obsidian vault! At least now I have a clean custom template every time I create a new note!

What type of customization do you get with that plugin? I’m having trouble vizualizing what sort of template you can do? Like bullet lists? Or automatic link to another note? Stuff like that?

Templater is incredibly powerful - too much so. I use the folder auto template function mostly along with the standard properties function. This allows me to create a note template ("Basic") that has the layout and properties I want for every note that gets created by default notes folder. One of the properties is to apply the date the note was created automagically.

Ah so you add the metadata directly in the note. Interesting

SpiderOak One might be an appealing option for sync over apex cloud vendors.

What is spider oak?

End-to-end encrypted sync. You can use it like Dropbox or iCloud. I've used it for a few years. They have gone through some changes since this article, but it looks like they have settled. I haven't used them recently because of the cost. They are famous for a Snowden endorsement:

https://siliconprairienews.com/2014/08/snowden-endorsed-spideroak-doesn-t-want-the-key-to-your-private-info/

I see “contact for pricing” on the website. Sounds expensive 👀

Looks cool!

$6/mo. for 150GB storage, which for stuff like the OP is fine. At least when I had it, they were very precise as far as security concerns. It is the only service I've ever had where if you delete it, it is gone, without annoying follow-ups. You disappear. Their 2TB isn't that much more than Google One. My only concern is the health after their split. It looks like 2 years ago they hit a rough patch. That was after my time with them. My experience with their GNU/Linux client was good, which is another rarity.

Interesting. What do you mean by health after their split? The company split up?

If you go to spideroak (com), it has a different focus. There is a link to crossclave (com) for the download of One. Both sites also reference refactoring. Crossclave has working like moving products to on-prem, etc. Is One orphaned? Are the suits selling out to the money machine of the day and sacrificing the original product? I don't know. All of this happened since I used it. While I was trying to figure this out, I found somebody on Reddit who was leaving SpiderOak One and referenced this list:

It is a familiar story. For some reason companies can't just stick with what they do well. You would think that a Snowden certification on the product would get you a rock solid brand. That was why I originally got it.

and Open Source! Also this from same developer > https://monogr.ph/
