This is totally random but several years ago an acquaintance in China remarked that she absolutely hated the following emoji -> πŸ™‚

To be precise it was the version on Weibo iirc, but the sentiment was the same - it looks like a fake smile - insincere - almost condescending.

I didn't really get it at the time but the more I see people use πŸ™‚ the more I tend to agree, especially when there are so many better alternatives, like 😁 , 😊 , πŸ˜ƒ and 😺 .

Anyone else bothered by πŸ™‚ or is it just me? πŸ€“

nostr:npub1vqmh8edfflrlcf4ly39cdeqg7lqg6wrphew6mk52zp23wmyzywsslgccpx i usually don't wear reading glasses when I'm choosing an emoji and it could be almost any type of smile when i post it!

nostr:npub1vqmh8edfflrlcf4ly39cdeqg7lqg6wrphew6mk52zp23wmyzywsslgccpx Best smile: :blobgoat:

nostr:npub1vqmh8edfflrlcf4ly39cdeqg7lqg6wrphew6mk52zp23wmyzywsslgccpx i absolutely detest the poop emoji. i am not into scat humor in any shape or form. HAAAATE IT!

nostr:npub1vqmh8edfflrlcf4ly39cdeqg7lqg6wrphew6mk52zp23wmyzywsslgccpx back in the days of not actually having emoji images I used to really like to do an upside down one (and a few others based on that like a d: for reversed tongue-stuck-out for instance) just to really drive home how samey it all was. Well, can't really do that today.

nostr:npub1vqmh8edfflrlcf4ly39cdeqg7lqg6wrphew6mk52zp23wmyzywsslgccpx i find that many people have various emojis that are frequently used to mean subtleties that i would not personally use. i keep expanding my understanding of what is β€˜normal’ communication to others, it’s fascinating.

nostr:npub1vqmh8edfflrlcf4ly39cdeqg7lqg6wrphew6mk52zp23wmyzywsslgccpx I find all of the cat faces creepy. 😸

You’d probably hate how often I use πŸ™‚πŸ™ƒβ€¦ not at all to be condescending. More to show allegiance for something when a big grin would be too much. Upside down is my take on irony or weird-funny.

I agree with other’s comments that’s its interesting how differently we each perceive emoji meanings. 🀨

nostr:npub1vqmh8edfflrlcf4ly39cdeqg7lqg6wrphew6mk52zp23wmyzywsslgccpx A few years back, I was using this emoji πŸ€— heaps as a cheeky shrug, to say β€œhah, what can ya do?” or β€œor gee, how about that”… then I found out it’s called the β€œhug” emoji, and I’d actually been hugging everyone for months. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

No problem with πŸ™‚ .

nostr:npub1vqmh8edfflrlcf4ly39cdeqg7lqg6wrphew6mk52zp23wmyzywsslgccpx I really like πŸ™‚ ! It's just a low key, pleasantness. I also use πŸ˜ƒ (and not πŸ˜€ ) when I'm making stupid jokes because the big eyes show my enthusiasm for silliness. (At least that's what I reckon. πŸ˜ƒ )

I do not understand πŸ€“ and it seems like picking on people for appearances.

nostr:npub1vqmh8edfflrlcf4ly39cdeqg7lqg6wrphew6mk52zp23wmyzywsslgccpx fake smiles are wonderful for hiding the terror of social awkwardness. Don't take that from meeeee

nostr:npub1vqmh8edfflrlcf4ly39cdeqg7lqg6wrphew6mk52zp23wmyzywsslgccpx I hate all yellow-face emojis, because I can't tell what their mouths are doing. Is that a smile? Frown? Straight line? Wiggly thing? To me, they're all just meaningless yellow dots.

Why are we so conscientious about alt texting our images, while inserting illegible images IN OUR DAMN TEXT ITSELF?
