Ok, i'm starting to get pretty wary of digging in my garden beds. Seems like this is the year of very fat copperheads. Damn things are creepy, and dangerous. #gardening #snakes #homesteading

Are they in the soil? Or on top? Tools first!
Both, its very creepy. I've always been cautious and run a shovel or hoe thru areas wiith lots of leaves or debris. But i have encountered some that are hidden under the soil, while i'm working very close to them.
Time to burn everything down and move
Right? Kinda feels like they're holding me hostage or something.
Zero tolerance for anything that can cause that much harm. Just killed a milk snake because I thought it was a copperhead.
Yeah, our dogs have been bitten multiple times. When i still worked at the hospital, we would see snake bite patients pretty frequently, it ain't pretty.
Was in Texas once, don't get the appeal at all. Have family that live there and it just seems miserable. Love my 4 seasons of the North East. Be safe!
I wonder if there would be any way to attract other snakes 🤔.
I almost stepped on a copperhead when hiking on the AT. Scary stuff.
I'm glad I don't have to deal with this, one more reason to love cold.
Well we do have other snakes, and i know that king snakes prey on copperheads. But the copperheads are just prolific, especially this year.
Ah okay, so there is a bunch of mice this year for the copperheads to eat? What could be done to reduce the copperhead food supply?
I would think other snakes would also eat copperhead food, possibly taking over territory.
Be safe out there.
Dang, the worst I’ve had in my garden is a harmless garter.
I am not sure who I would rrather encounter. Your copperheads (I think are Agkistrodon contortrix?) , who seem to sit still, in camouflage, when approached . . . Or our copperheads (Austrelaps superbus, image added) who are our only venemous snakes that live above the snow line . . . Lucky for us, even though they have pretty hectic venom, they are also really loud when approached (hissers), and not very accurate when striking.
Beautiful, creepy.
Stay safe!
