Other social media works just fine for them. It has people and they are happy. They don’t care about the same things we care about.

For nostr to win social, it has to offer a magnitudes better experience or be ok with slow and continuous growth with incremental improvements.

To build better experiences we have to discard bitcoin and zaps from consideration of what makes a good social app. Yes, it’s better with zaps but we have to remember many people simply don’t care about bitcoin, lightning, any of it. What they will use as the measurement criteria is the network effect, and the social experience (how awesome it is, if it’s fun, addicting etc)

People are selfish no matter how you slice it. We do everything in our best interest, to feel good in the moment, long term, avoid pain and discomfort.

We’ve got our work cut out for us for sure 👍 nostr:note1n7u46czxadsux7ch0t5nw9gen9k2h8ax7x5grd8zzjujkaxchvpq4mrcm4

If we could build apps on nostr, more people would definitely follow. The reason I am not making an ios app although is because Zaps wont be allowed so I think you are kinda right. Gotta move away from zaps and bitcoin and then we can have people who eventually learn the other capabilities of nostr than just zapping.

I want to be clear about my stance. I am not saying we should remove zaps. I actually think zaps are the killer feature of nostr. What I AM saying is that any client/app create don nostr has to stand on solid footing without zaps as a differentiator. It has to be better, cheaper, faster, whatever, in a significant way because switching costs and habit building is expensive. Zaps are just gravy on top.

I agree. Don't think relays are the issue. Convoluted subscription ones might add to the confusion. But is mainly painting ourselves into a orange corner a bit. I love Bitcoin and even get tired of 80% of notes I see about it.

very well said.

I meant same thing. Zaps are an integral part and should be celebrated like every other aspect of nostr.

What i meant was using apps is easier and faster for people but if nostr devs creates apps on ios, App store doesnt allow sending zaps which restricts devs from creating apps.

Also, very curious on other people’s view on making nostr faster. Is it even possible considering the open nature of nostr ecosystem and relying on multiple relays at a time to gather information about any event.

The idea of paying for relays is good in general. Maybe a stripe integration for relays is overdue

You are right indeed. It is not possible to beat network effects with idealism if the idea is to scale up (as much as I personally love the self sovereignty philosophy behind nostr). Ease of use, great a more diverse content and better UI/UX, are the only ways to scape current “tribalism”.

A good exercise might be to think about why an average person tries Twitter for the first time, and what makes him stay.

Such a mood. Whilst I try to use common analogies for Zaps and stuff, I would really love to just invite people to a "social network" - without "but bitcoin" in the back of it. But hey, Nostr itself is quite young, we'll see how things build out. For me, personally, I am happy it works, is open, accessible and fun!

Coming from Twitter my main issue is that all political parties, even official national government companies are missing here, they are on Twitter. On Twitter I usually react to their BS, quote them, challenge their lies, etc. Maybe a "quote anything from anywhere on the internet" nostr feature could help with my usecase, but maybe I am just too lazy to always create screenshots 😏🙈.

One of the main reasons I still have a Twitter account is to keep up with the local scene where I live, News etc, I guess in due time

Maybe “winning” social doesn’t matter?

🤷‍♂️

I agree with your sentiment. Most people don't care or don't want what nostr offers them. The core tenets of freedom are not what most people seek. I also agree that for nostr to become the most popular "social" network it has to be better, or even significanlty better on what people care about. People don't seem to care about freedom of speech, freedom, individual responsibility, or having control over their data. Maybe, this shouldn't be the goal becuase it's not realistic. Maybe, nostr will just a be a place for freedom loving individualist, that look for an authentic digital space to communicate? I don't really know.
