Is there a way to configure display & sleep settings on an older MacBook (like 2012-13ish) such that you can close the computer, leaving it plugged in, and it will keep running?

Even better if you could set the lock screen, close the computer, and have it not go to sleep.

I have a wanna-be-Bitcoin-node in a closet, but I’d rather not have another laptop sitting open on a counter all the time. City apartments aren’t known for their abundant surface area or storage 😉

Not sure if there are better alternatives to this, but this is what I use: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/amphetamine/id937984704?mt=12

amphetamines also work on humans

Indeed, it’s a cleverly named app.

there's an old one for linux called caffeine that does the same thing for X

Hilarious. And great idea, using an application to keep “doing” something. And this even works when you shut the laptop?

It’s very customizable. Preventing sleep with the lid closed is one of the options for sure.

Awesome, thanks dude. Will definitely try this out

Don't know the answer to the actual question (should be possible!). but correct way to run a server laptop without taking too much space is this (close as much as possible and place on bookshelf for example):

Ahahaha thank you sir 😂

I just realized one of my coworkers uses two monitors and a shut MacBook standing on its side. So it’s gotta be a thing.

Also laptops tend to overheat when running w/ screen fully closed - so this helps for airflow and passsive cooling as well

That’s a great point. Do you think running a Bitcoin core node (and not much else) will make the old MacBook heat up if closed? Or do people just leave their laptop nodes open (or in the A-frame angle) most of the time?

Yeah personally, I'd leave it open somewhat– Especially older models tend to be actively air-cooled.

Cool, makes sense! Wonder if they make “stands” to keep them steady 🤔

Good question
