Welcome to stoicism

Do you think it's part of our current cycle's need that pushes people toward that? Something we are missing

Yeah I think current humanity has lost its sense of wonder. We have basically everything figured out, the only way to expand human knowledge is things like LHC which are billion dollar projects led by beuacrats, nothing achievable by common man anymore.

Why do you believe that we have everything figured out?

I believe that we have forgotten more than we will ever know.

I like to think we've gained in some areas but lost in others. Connection to others or the divine, some may say, has been lost.

And what’s more important than that?

Good point. Perhaps learning how to best meet those needs? Wisdom. Create that environment, even if afraid. Courage. Fighting for others to have it since we are all human. Justice. Finding a balance with all those, your growing wisdom that will change how you approach those, and your circles of concern that can have the greatest impact. Temperance.

Yes, without community and connection to a higher purpose, we are statues. Tourists, rummaging through our blankets looking for our medicine.

next step in rabbit hole....where did THEY learn?

Someone asked me today who my favorite philosopher is. Socrates.

People thought he was annoying. But I believe he was near enlightenment. He was humble. He felt moved by a higher power to help humanity find truth, by questioning what people thought they knew.

He was executed for it, but his first disciple (Plato) told his stories in ways that remind me of saints from both the east and the west.

Where should i start?

Please sir. Post the links πŸ™

Rome …. it’s all Greek to some 🀣

Wait till you realize Monotheism is BS and the Hindus and Ancient Greeks were right to have polytheism based cultures.

tell me more...

Read The Darkening Age by Catherine Nixey.

Please post your fav

I was surprised that this is not commonly taught at US schools... when I was at high school we went deep into "SPA" (Solon, Platon, AristotelΓ©s), and then other philosophical directions and more recent stuff like Kierkegaard.

I heard that philosophy in Arabic is notably different.

(actually S was for Socrates... my bad)

They don't do that much of it in German Gymnasium, either, unless you specialize in ancient Greek.

It's very popular among US homeschoolers, tho.

Feel free to join the Classical Conversations community, where we're currently reading through Aristotle's "The Rhetoric" together.

Probably do Plato's "Republic" next.
