I will provide a situation, and you will give me the shortest pitch possible that makes sense to the average person.

You: "Have you heard about #nostr"

Normie: "No, what is this?"

It’s your own social media.

A confusing mess you probably wouldn't understand. It's pretty cool earning bitcoin for social posts and learning the truth about money that schooling won't teach us. You should probably stay away from it and just keep supporting the government. I hear taxes and inflation are set to go up. Super strong dollar! They're doing a great job at running the country. BIDEN 2024!

🤣

its social media and no one can censor you

Honestly, I wouldn't continue.

Nostr isn't well defined yet IMO. For most normies it is the next social media, but it can be so much more.

I might, if pushed, say that it is the next social media that is still developing but has no ads, no manipulative algorithms and no central business that a government can coerce into censoring uncomfortable opinions and information.

It’s a new way to be social online that isn’t owned or controlled by anyone or any company, and allows you to use your same profile across any other nostr app no matter who creates the app.

Social media that's not completely fucked but also has potential to be much much more than just social media. No one can take away your account or anything you post there.

It lets users create identities for publishing signed notes and events. No one can fake posts like Twitter and Mastodon admins can.

Nostr? It's a round, big-eared Pokémon. It actually exists. The police and special services already know about it. They interrogated me too, but I didn't say anything. I didn't confess that this Pokémon lives in my house. And you don't tell them either.

You can be your own twitter

Think of anything you can do on the Internet: social media, eBay, Venmo, sharing pictures, etc.

Nostr let's you do all of this, but it's not owned or manipulated by any corporation.

nostr is more than/ puts the fire in lfg

nostr>other soc.

It allows you to create an internet identity permissionlessly. By using cryptography your actions can be verified without the need to trust a platform to relay your information. This allows you to use anyone to relay your data, freeing you from being at the mercy of the platform you use.

Refer them to my beginner's guide!

My real anwer, but its from this npub, so it dont mean shit;

Nostr is a decentralized platform that combines social interactions with easy payment capabilities while allowing users to engage socially and send payments with a single click, fostering a seamless experience across various applications. Nostr aims to unify different apps into a cohesive ecosystem, offering broad user accessibility and promoting innovation without traditional audience-building hurdles.

🤔

Did I win? 🤣🫂💜

No, but that’s how I used to explain as well. Close to

"It's social media where users are in control of their accounts rather than corporations. It's still pretty new, but there's lots of great apps for it already! It's my main platform now. Here, let me show you how to sign up so we can follow each other! What kind of phone do you have?"

(You don't need to explain everything about decentralizion, censorship resistance, etc. You just need to get them to open their phone and try it. People are the main reason other people join social media. If they have a connection you, that's your in. Once they have their account, they can learn the details later.)

It’s all the things that we do online — social media, e-commerce, Google search — but without handing control over to any of the big tech companies. Which means no one to spy on you, no one to feed you advertisements, no one to kick you off if they don’t like who you are or what you have to say.

The new internet, where you can login to each app you’d like with 1 key.

All your connections (followers and people you follow) are immediately available in each app, no need to rebuild your connections per app.

Everything is tied together and it has payments build in. Basically everything you need from the internet 🛜

Oh and it’s censorship free and unstoppable, but people aren’t interested in that so it seems

Decentralized social media. You are in control of the content you want to see AND you get zapped (paid) for your content! Then proceed to show them my travel pics and zaps 😜

Focus on ability to read, watch and listen to what media you want is on point.

Its like if you have 1 profile that can be used for YT, twitter, twitch, reddit, except no company controls it, you actually own your profile

A protocol that serves you the freedom of choice

The Future

Well, have you ever got frustrated of having multiple accounts for social media? Your followers on one platform don't follow you everywhere and you need to create a new account and content and following for every platform? Well Nostr is social media except you get one account that you can use on YouTube, reddit, Twitter, Instagram, etc, and all your content, likes and followers come with you everywhere. In fact you can take your profile wherever you like, be anon if you want, and no one can ever deplatform you or censor or ban you or stop you using it in any way at all. You never risk losing your account, and all your content and followers get to stay with you for ever no matter what.

Social media like X where you can send money to anyone, anywhere and can say anything without fear of your account getting nuked!

The only place where the state can't modulate the narrative.

it's an protocol where information is liberated.

“#Nostr a new concept for The Web. It prioritizes user choice over all else, returning publishing power to the people.”

And if they want more detail…

“The Web used to be awesome. Back when it started, it was a revolution like the invention of the printing press. No longer was mass-publishing controlled by a few large, faceless media companies. Anyone could have a web site and everyone could read it. While that’s still technically true, in practice The Web has been co-opted by new, large, faceless corporations who are not only once again controlling virtually all publishing, but conducting mass-surveillance and directing public sentiment while they do it.

“Nostr is still small right now, but the few of us who know about it are excited and see the potential for it to once again disrupt the cycle of the powerful accumulating more power, and exerting more influence, at the expense of the people.”

You get to own your digital identity for the first time in your life.

Hell, you get to own your identity for the first time in your life.
