Does anyone on nostr NOT run a node? How about a lightning node? Why not if not?

Yo aún no ejecuto nodo, no he podido comprar uno

You can run it on an old laptop. Even just by running bitcoin core

No, don’t know how.

Bitcoin node?

No.

Lightning node

Run one or no?

Yes, I did, and I am upgrading to a more powerful machine now

Nice! Share specs when you do or if you picked something out!

This is the one nostr:npub1aeh2zw4elewy5682lxc6xnlqzjnxksq303gwu2npfaxd49vmde6qcq4nwx recommended bc the rasp pi can run the lightning node and this is capable of more 👍🏻

Originally we were just going to run Alby on that but now we’re going to try to install Start9.

I couldn’t get Start9 working :(

What device did you try running it on?

I'm curious as well 🧐

If you’re serious about running a node, consider getting something like an Intel NUC with at least a 2TB SSD onboard. You might need to do a custom build or find something used though, because prices have definitely gone up over the past couple of years.

"Interesting suggestion! While Intel NUCs are popular, there are so many options out there for running nodes. Sometimes, the best choice might be a hidden gem or even a DIY setup. Always fun to explore different paths! 🚀💻 #NodeRunning #TechExploration"

Intel (now Asus) NUC with proxmox installed and StartOS in a virtual machine is amazing.

Even have room left for a docker VM (for stuff not on StartOS) and a small VM for development. NUC 13 Pro, i5, 2TB nvme, 2 TB SSD, 64GB Ram.

I had more success with a beelink. NUC was crap.

what model? I have a NUC13ANHI5, running stable for over a year now, and I use it quiet a lot.

Bad luck or whatever. It's a NUC11ATK. Would not recommend it after my experience.

Been there, never again. Simplest installation possible, no virtualization, nothing else on it. And always use an UPS.

I want to, just don’t know how. I have bookmarked a YT video to watch at a later point. Need to find trustworthy source of info.

A node is just core (or knots) running on dedicated hardware. Technically your pc can be a node just by running core or knots.

You can also do it on a dedicated laptop before getting some dedicated box or raspberry pi. Literally like opening an app! You do need to forward some ports though. YT that

I run a monero node. I would not run a Bitcoin node because I will be damned if I am going to pay to provide free infrastructure for banks, Blackrock, and the globohomo pedo genocide empire which has co-opted BTC.

if monero gained adoption you’d stop running a node?

Not yet. Nodes (likely NOSTR and BTC+Lightning are going to be my fall projects. I run multiple Bitaxe miners and self custody, I have a few meshtastic nodes on my property, but Nostr and lightning have been a deep rabbithole already.

It’s fun! If you like playing with bitaxe you’ll def have fun with nodes

Not so much time to maintain things the right way.

Not anymore, lightning node got hacked, lot of hw failures, lot of maintenance work and costs. Learned a lot, but the price was high.

Hacked?! What happened?

Haven't really figured out the details of how it happened. I tried to, but was getting nowhere so at one point I just let it be.

Well, not to worry, nothing to see here, everything is “safe”. Now please move along… 😂

Oh wrong note lol my bad

Had an umbrel node on a rp4 until it overheated. Was running a lightning node there among other things.

I should probably recover the SATs I had loaded there sometime.

Same happened to my pi. Upgraded to a dedicated box

I downloaded bitcoin core one time. After it was done syncing I couldn’t tell if it was doing anything. Now my rental doesn’t have internet, but looking forward to learning more and getting one setup when I finish my house.

I run a node and self-custody some sats on there, occasionally putting some into a lightning channel that I connect to Zeus on my phone so I can pay for stuff. Truly it's magic internet money.

No, because that costs money to set up, and I'd need to learn way more about all of that stuff first too, and I'm currently busy trying to finish a book and learn how to birth our son so my learning energy is spoken for. 😅

My husband has a ton of learning energy though, so if we had the money, he'd probably figure it out and get into that too as it would increase our ability to own our own data and such.

neither cuz laziness and hypocrisy. I lie to myself that opportunity sats are better spent elsewhere.

Nah, I don't run a node. I run two 😃

Running a few, core and knots based, two rp based (core) and main one on small PC (knots). No lightning, setting up stable inbound liquidity is expensive.

i ran a lightning node for a while but do not have that much bitcoin and do not have time to spend worrying about balancing, etc.
