I’ve been home visiting my family in the USA the last 2 weeks and in the 2 years since I was here last I feel like the quality of pretty much everything has noticeably decreased.

Shops and restaurants are run more poorly, turn out worse product, and cost more.

There appears to be a general apathy and nihilism I can’t remember ever seeing here when I was growing up.

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed this same thing?

Where in the states?

South western Virginia. I’ve been in the states a few times over the last 2 years but this is a consistent comparison in the same location.

Beautiful country.

Super poor.

Yeah. Not all of it but on the whole that’s very true.

I’ve noticed this in London. I wasn’t born here but spent a lot of years living here and it has noticeably declined in all the ways you mention. This is Western declinism.

Yeah. It’s crazy isn’t it. Feels like late stage empire for sure.

Checks out, quality and service has gone downhill overall and nihilism is rampant.

We were just talking about it at a restaurant we were just at.. Worse service and cost more..

2nd and 3rd order consequences of garbage money. 😒

It seems like they are experiencing burnout, working excessively, and being inadequately compensated. Insufficient staffing exacerbates the problem as costs continue to rise.

Yep, totally.

Plus, service industry is a demanding field and pay usually low. It’s constant interacting with people, some disgruntled or/and arseholes. There are still places in USA where servers only get $2.13/hour. Many people also assume they are not smart, educated or/and they rarely get respect. Tip full restaurant severs well! Be nice to them and store employees.

I would recommend reading Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America by Barbara Ehrenreich

I’ve noticed. Our downtown is far more dangerous now too.

😢

I notice the same trend pretty much everywhere, faster in some place than others

Social atomization is at an all time high. People move more frequently, have less friends, and generally feel less connected to and responsibility for the community they are in. I agree it is a general apathy and nihilism that has permeated the vast majority of people here.

The exceptions I've seen are in small pockets of upwardly mobile, generally racially homogenous suburban populations. They are like little insulated self sustaining ecosystems wherein the residents are happy and affluent, and thus treat and tip the employees of local businesses well. These are the exceptions however and it is only a matter of time before the rot spreads to them too.

💯

Yeah. That resonates. It’s a tough problem for sure. The internet and tech have given us a lot but it’s not a replacement for human contact and local communities.

It’s not just you noticing that.

It's definitely real, it's rampant across the states, and it's disturbing to experience in real time.

Don’t forget the drones how everyone basically wearing the same clothes

I noticed a strong degradation in downtown Chicago when we visited in May 2022. I put it down to the after effects of covid pandemic lockdown.
