But the next post also contains a quote, and the next, etc so following the breadcrumb trail all the way in gets you to the first post but you've also by then seen it all backwards and going "forward" through it means using your "back button". It's very awkward

awkward, but (top posting or not) its always necessary to get to the first post to get the full context, right?

One could (laboriously) post all the notes and record the IDs and then reverse-quote them all in a new ridiculous chain? Inside-out-posting
