As a strategist, it befuddled me for years why people would make choices that would lead to problems. Then I read a book called Curse of the High IQ, and although nihilistic which isn't my taste at all, it helped me to understand that most of what we encounter in society is catered to, well, kind of dumb people. Since then, I still despise stupid decisions, but now I at least understand why they are dumb.
Fiat money likely exacerbates that problem. Endless bailouts and welfare programs for people and institutions that make bad decisions.

Most people can't think beyond first-order effects.
They can't 'think ahead' to what might happen 2-3 steps later if they start a business, attempt a career change, or set up an investment plan.
So they don't make plans or think strategically because they CANNOT.
They trade their time for labor, because they don't need a strategy for that. They just do what they're told. There's comfort in that.
