I don't have space for this, but it came up in conversation and now I want to know - if you buy a whole cow from a rancher/butcher instead of piecemeal from a store, is that cheaper? Bout how much is it?
Discussion
Depends on the rancher and on what processing would cost you and do you have the commitment to eat the whole cow. If you were tempted id buy a half and see how long it takes you.
I'd say you can't gauge by your grocery buy rate. A freezer full of beef on hand will cause you to eat more beef.
I sure would... I love beef
Yes. At least here it is. Just paid $6.XX I forget exactly per lb for a 1/4 cow.
Yes. Picked up a half head of beef around $7 a lb where I am. Some of the best beef I've had. About to split another with a buddy. It's well worth it. Get a standup freezer or two though
Chest freezer is more energy efficient than upright.
Okay, how to you find the rancher? Go to a farmers market? Oh, and do you have to separately arrange the butchering?
Thanks all for the answers. I truly don't have space for it, but I'm intrigued and this is already helping someone who thought it would be way more expensive.
(why is Bill's npub so long, compared to others?)
