Maybe we should stop calling the Contact List a Follow list. Contacts should include everyone you know, independent if you follow their feed or not.
Follows should be just another NIP-51 list.
The Follow button should be then renamed to "Add to Contacts" and, in that screen, you can pick the list to add them to as well, including a Generic Follow list for the main feed.

Generally speaking, #Nostr gives us huge opportunities to rethink social media mechanics, so we shouldn't just copy features from obsolete apps, without questioning them first. :)
If it’s called a “Contact” list people will just dump anyone in there. Could be called a “Verified” list instead
And that Contact List (different than the Follow list) could be used by other apps as a synchronized Contact List.
Some Bitcoin Lightning Wallets could use it to send automatically some sats to those contacts, for example.

It wouldn’t even need to be labelled “private”. Could just have a little icon to indicate “friends only” like fb has etc

They can, but only people that have the key can decrypt it.
You share the decryption key to the people in the List that I mentioned above
i think each list should be able to work as a feed or maybe better described as a filter, then you could apply one list to show content and another to hide it, ie like a regular follows list and a block list but much more possibilities where you can enable multiple lists, trade lists, colab on lists
Clever... you could keep friends/interests in feed & work associates in contacts or vice versa. Seems like that would help with impersonation a bit too

Sounds a little too convoluted imo. In this case, I'd rather just have two buttons ("Add Contact" and "Follow") rather than having a follow become a two-step click.
Albeit Nostr is a very versatile protocol, it is still often and mainly used for microblogging. More clicks would be more friction, I think.
