Why is Discord so popular? Seriously? 🧐
Discussion
It is the go to community chat platform and has lots of call and streaming uses, social gaming, etc. it's really convenient.
Though I'm only in one server that I actually care about.
I get the utility aspect of it. I suppose it is a step in the right direction, but it’s another “like and subscribe” box to check.
I hate that chat apps like discord (+Reddit) basically killed forums. Trying to find older info on discord is a nightmare.
I hate that forums killed Usenet.
Get off my lawn!
Curious, becuse many other people do too, why you associate Discord with Reddit? They seem very different approaches. Isnt Reddit basically a forum (maybe weighted by votes)
They aren't similar in design, it's just that they came about at the same time, and this coincided with traditional phpBB style forums dying off.
Discord is a confusing mess. Voting on Reddit leads to brigading and groupthink. I miss old style forums. No algorithm, OP's ordered by most recent activity, comments ordered chronologically, with pinned threads for truly important information.
#nostrBB
I don't know. My friend group growing up pretty much only hangs out on there. I guess we won't be hanging our anymore.
Videogames
That is a great question. I seriously don't get it. The quickest way for me not to join in on whatever is happening is to tell me to join your Discord server.
I was a huge Discord user from 2016-2020. I haven't really used it since then.
Nostr rules everything around me 🤙 N.R.E.A.M.
i used to live on discord much how 25 years ago i used to live on irc. but discord is just dumb and boring now. *shrug* i used to have those apps on my phone and desktop but i haven't in years. if i need to use discord for some reason ill login via the web. but this is honestly only once every 6 months or more for a very specific reason. nostr is where it's at.

Built in group voice calls without requiring any 3rd party app installs. Kids love it for gaming. I hate it, just another crap app asking for my email and verification.

- online status
In short, it's slack workgroups for gamers. It's best of breed in its class.
When I use Discord my anxiety goes up.
Which btw I almost never do because it's spyware and doesn't work well with VPNs.
Too Gen Z for me.
Network effects. I hate discord but am definitely on there a lot. I've refused to give up on IRC though, even if it is only 5 or 6 people I still talk to on there.
