One disadvantage of nostr apps is not being able to deliver notifications to emails.

Unless added, users have no way of looping back into nostr ecosystem without actively thinking about it.

I suspect some clients will start adding email integrations (not for login, but for notifications) sooner or later. This will probably mean having a database as well.

You could invent like an app/site where in input your npub and it sends notifications about all traffic right?

I found this to be an advantage. You are not even tempted into getting bombarded with notifications if you are not strictly disciplined about your follow or interaction base.

I also generally tend to disable most notifications for all kinds of services & try to keep only notifications for the most important stuff. As of now, #Nostr, as far as I know anyway, is used mostly for chill communication rather than something you need to be aware of, right when someone reacts to whatever.

Would there be any interest in getting notifications to your email? I might be completely wrong here, but I feel like 99% of it would be just spam for me

When have you ever wanted to get an email from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Reddit for example? 🤔

I would not want it. Somebody might.

Depends on the platform. Social - not interested but zap.stream would be useful

What emails would I want to have from zap.stream? 🤔

I’m not a mind reader so I don’t know. But I imagine people would want to see their cumulative stream and zap sats. Maybe get updated on new developments / features and be reminded of upcoming streams.

Stats *

Maybe update/newsletters could be one 🤔

I’d rather see the analytics on the client itself under the profile settings dropdown “Analytics” part

Once again you are talking about your personal preferences. This is fine but there are billions of people on this planet believe it or not.

i seriously doubt that email would be a popular choice 💜

I’d argue that having the zap.stream bot actually post people going live on nostr would gather you more traction and viewership 🤔

could email be an option? totally, i just don’t see that big of a necessity in it

It increases product stickiness whether you understand it or not.

so the more different channels you have your product attached to, the bigger the network, the more the brand is in your subconscious and the more you wanna use it?

or how do you understand product stickiness 🤔

No. Literally being where your audience is (inbox) and giving them reason to loop back into the product.

It won’t be useful to you because you’re already here daily

It’s not about what is the best way to get notified - this is subjective and every user will have different preferences, there is no best method.

It’s about increasing stickiness and habit formation for millions of people who check their emails daily or 50 times per day.

All my apps notifications are muted besides chat, email, banking and calls. I see this as a trend that is only getting bigger because notification overload is too distracting. So for me and a bunch others specific email notifications are something that would get my attention. To each their own though.

Same. I mute all push notifications always. There’s no way to notify me of anything unless I check. And I check email so I’d see them there. Of course I muted Twitter emails long ago but some platform notifications are actually useful.

I was thinking Twitch emails for example, and I think I’ve tuned in once or twice because it sent me an “X is live right now” or something along the lines, so fair enough 💜

Especially ones I can specifically tailor like simple email alert when someone scheduled a stream or Nostr nest would definitely make me more likely to hop back on and participate/tune in.

Same

That’s a good point, but it would still fall under my entertainment emails, not the work emails 🤔

But regardless, if it grabs your attention for even 1-2 seconds, it’s now on your mind again

Now I’m actually curious about how often people check their email accounts, might be underestimating it heavily 🤔

Kinda understanding more what you’re getting at, could be a great way to hook back in the people that maybe use a nostr app once a week or even less

Google is your friend there 🙌 or chatgpt

Ability to set email notification for certain streamers so I know when they went live or scheduled a stream would be useful.

I just don’t see the need for an email notification for that?

By the time that would be necessary, I’d expect the client to be on my phone, which is where I get pretty much all my notitications daily anyway 🤔💜

I’d just think client notifications would be the way to go, email causes so much noise to people already, so it’d have to be something really good to make people want it 🤔

What about a personal phone call?

where can i sign up?

On a rotary phone you just call the number to sign up.

Rotary phone only tho…

Anyone happens to have a rotary phone left over somewhere?

I only want my zap.stream update notes as morning calls now 😆💜

Pagers would be a cool option too. 😉

Never seen or used one

In-client notifications are fine but they don’t reach you outside. External triggers help with habit formation which is what you need to get used to new platforms. Otherwise you have high drop off rate even if your apps are better.

While you are not incorrect, this sounds like one of those psycho mechanics from proprietary social media, which try to bind all users as long & much as possible to the screen. Just saying.

If the app is really good, people will return.

It won't be that good, if it uses the same psycho shit which many here try get away from.

if i have notifications set on for a client app on my phone, i’ll receive them outside of the client 🤔

until a phone client app is made (if it is), then maybe the possibility of getting an email when the streamer you’ve subscribed to goes live could be a thing maybe?

Alby gives me an email notification when I receive over 1K sats in a zap. It definitely pulls me back into Nostr when I see it.

Exactly

Emails do nudge you, but I don’t like them, to be honest.

It’s usually someone mentioning Nostr or me needing to check something, is when I come here.

Just don’t add an email address then? 🤷‍♂️

I have definitely considered it

It’s gonna happen sooner or later

I could see this being implemented as a passive service running on some small IoT - it's super low resource. After all, all that one would have to do is to listen for events such as likes and follows or replies and send a message via SMTP. Would be a neat, literal microservice. :)

Aside from that, looking forward to nostr emails/eletters via a new NIP to differenciate it from a DM/PM. I'd imagine that would making email notifications mich easier to do as you would just toggle some options in your mostr profile.
