Ever hear the term “paywalled reach”? It basically means you have to pay for people to see your content—whether that’s through ads, boosting posts, or other pay-to-play tactics.

On most platforms, if you’re not paying, your reach is limited. Even the people who chose to follow you might not see your posts because an algorithm decides what shows up in their feed.

That’s what makes Nostr different. No ads, no algorithm controlling what people see. When someone engages with your content here, it’s because they actually want to—not because they were targeted or fed it through some paid system.

But here’s the controversy—do paid ads actually help with organic reach and followers? Some say yes, because more eyes on your content can lead to organic engagement. Others argue that you can run ads, spend money, and still not gain any real followers.

What do you think? Have you run ads and actually seen long-term growth, or was it just temporary engagement that disappeared once the ads stopped? Let’s discuss.

The more traction you can get without ads, the more traction you can get with ads, generally.

There's also the strategy of using ads to break through recognition barriers, like how TikTok used a massive campaign to break the barrier of seeming big enough to compete with YouTube, after past attempts like Vine left people disappointed.

Yep, building trust first really helps when you do start using ads. Once people know you, ads just push things further and make a bigger impact.

Depends on what you're offering & how valuable it is / can convey through the AD.

There's a fine line with spray and pray & actually well managed AD campaigns as well.

Exactly! It all comes down to what you’re offering and how well the ad communicates its value. There’s definitely a big difference between throwing ads out there and actually running well-thought-out, targeted campaigns that really resonate with the right audience.

I think the “real” followers are the ones who make a conscious decision to spend time with your content. I mean, if I really value someone’s content (but they are not pushed to my attention through algos or ads) I will still actively go look for it because I really care. On the other hand, if the content is pushed by algos/ads, most times it will get a quick look but not real engagement.

So I guess ads give you numbers but not quality

You’re right! Ads might bring in views, but the real value comes from those who choose to follow because they connect with your content. It’s about building a genuine audience, not just chasing numbers.

Cheers :)

I guess it depends whether someone cares more about views/money or quality followers. I’m aware that my view is a “romantic” one, but do we wanna ignore the sense of fulfilling and wellbeing a sincere community brings you?! Ain’t nothing like it!!

But then again, I also think that if you are not emotionally open/mature you can’t even experience this, so there is some pre-work to do to actually being able to experience this “ultimate joy” and thus giving it priority. Ok I digressed, I’ll stop talking now lol

I totally get where you’re coming from! Building a sincere community brings a level of fulfillment that numbers just can’t match. You’re right—being emotionally open and ready to engage is key to experiencing that deeper connection. It’s definitely worth prioritizing, even if it’s not the quickest route. And hey, digressions are welcome anytime!
