Here is my first experience with my new #[1] Jade

I came from ledger because I’m not a very techy person, but the way they build this interface and user experience is just great! Would recommend reading their tutorials on the website upfront so you’ll be able to set it up quite easily.

Features I already used:

- passphrases

- air gapped transactions: so no Bluetooth or usb connection for the ultimate security

All work like a charm!

Very happy with it and this thing will be recommended to every cool Bitcoin pleb from now on ⚡️💯

If you use the usb it’s not air gapped anymore

For air gapped transactions you can verify/sign the transaction by using the Jade’s camera 😍

No, you can also do it air gapped by scanning qr codes. In case the oracle might could not be reached you can always enter your seed manually to access your wallet. So no dependencies there

First of all price

Besides that just personal preference. I think this is a bit easier and less techy than a cold card but could be very wrong. Nevertheless they are both great I’ve heard

Whats nice about the jade over coldcard is the camera and its fully open sourced, combined with being the cheapest hardware wallet on the market

Did you sweep your ledger by using the private key or did you set up a new account and transfer onchain?

I ask because, I was thinking about opsec and how if Ledger already has access to your private keys, are you really safe from government tracking or seizure if you sweep to another hardware wallet?

Not saying for sure one way or another, just food for thought.

Thoughts about running it through a mixer furst? They wouldn't be able to sweepnsince its a new private key but they can track utxos

That’s up to you, your #Bitcoin is safe with a new seed phrase but it’s traceable if you left your identity (KYC) somewhere on the way.

I reset my ledger after I set it up the first time. Because I don’t do transactions with my Bitcoin stack.

Never did any update with it and just destroyed the whole thing and used my original seed. Additional layers of passphrases I do recommend.

But I can understand some people might not agree with this

i would not reuse the words/seed phrase (my trust in ledger is simply destroyed )

I don’t argue with that! I personally am not ready nor do I think it’s necessary to have multisig.

But I can definitely understand why you would want to have that extreme level of security

I won a Ledger Nano X in a contest, I didn’t receive it yet, I was very happy because I can’t afford it, and then I saw all the news about Ledger 😢 but now I think I will sell it and buy a Jade (I think it’s cheaper and I think I can buy it in my country) some people recommend Jade so I hope it’s good.

Not only on, you have to leave the MINING TAB OPEN ALL THE TIME. The device connects to this page and the page to the network. If you close it, your JADE will hash the same block forever and the chain will continue to grow without your JADE knowing it

Jade is great. It’s the entry level #bitcoin HWW that I would suggest at this point.

The wallet ladder I’d take a newcoiner through today is something like:

Muun < Green < Jade < Passport

Muun: for a LN wallet with good recovery features that don’t require doxing yourself.

Green: Blockstream’s standalone hot wallet and the native companion app for Jade. Simple UI, strong set of features.

Jade: Excellent HWW wallet at a keen price point ($65, though I remember when it used to be like $44.99). Also great for learning the basics of airgapping. Though it’s still a Bluetooth enabled device, so I slap camera cover on the back out of paranoia.

Passport: #[4] airgap ONLY HWW. Price hurts a bit more at $199 but they make airgapped key generation simple and easy, and their Envoy companion app is good enough (and will certainly improve more / quickly over time)

Remember to check out the BIP85 support for deriving new wallet seed mnemonics (secrets) from your Jade.

You use these to initialize ("recover") wallets for Green™ (mobile and desktop) or any other wallets.

Those derived wallets don't need separate backups, so you can burn the mnemonic copy paper. Your Jade's "master" mnemonic backup is sufficient to restore a Jade and re-derive any child keys you've used.

Aaaaactually you can use #[4] jade exactly like a seedsigner if you want to. You can choose to not store the seed but just temporarily boot it up either by entering it manually or scanning a qr code of your seed (you can draw yourself) 💪
