So interestingly I have installed Oxchat. I can see replies etc for Nostr on Oxchat but not on Primal anymore….. what’s up with that? 🤷‍♂️ does Nostr only ping one app? Some replies I can only see only on Oxchat and not on Primal for some reason as well. Do I need to add more relays to primal? I’m confused. I’m sorry If I haven’t replied to some people.

so, you are likely experiencing an issue with there being multiple messaging standards in nostr at the moment. Primal uses an older version of private messaging that is, well less private. 0xChat is made to be as private as nostr allows, and uses a more recently created, more private version of messaging.

but, this more private version of messaging does not appear in clients that only support the old messaging version. So, it presents a problem in nostr that, currently, there are some apps that do support new version of messaging, some do not. its unfortunate tradeoff of the newness and open source development that supports nostr.. The hope is that eventually apps only use newer, more private messaging version.

ill, also say i dont think 0xChat receives the old messaging standard, but i might be wrong. In any event its likely the reason you are experiencing a difference between the two apps.

DMs are a bit of a hot mess on #Nostr right now.

The existing community have just rolled with it, but also there is a much better and more private solution coming that hopefully all clients will adopt when it is tried and tested.

DMs in any other platform are typically private between you, them and THE PLATFORM. Even if the messages are end to end encrypted, metadata like who is talking to who, how often, at what times, are not private.

There is no platform on Nostr, but DMs are end to end encrypted. The bad news is that THE PLATFORM is replaced with THE PUBLIC. So Nostr needs to be better and this is driving innovation and development.

Right now, DMs are not safe for everyone, they aren't super private, but this will be solved, it just takes time. In the meantime, I recommend using chat apps like Signal and SimpleX until we get there and your client adopts the new standard.

I think it's called MLS.

Ok thanks for that

Primal does not allow users to define the relays they read or write to. It's a walled garden that scrapes lots of relays to make it look free. It's great if you only talk to other primal users. Check out nostrudel.ninja on a desktop and you will see how relay selection matters.

I’m starting to work that out. I’ll check it out in the morning.
