I don’t want to give anybody ideas, but I’m just thinking about a potential scam that could happen on nostr, feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.
Scammer ups a server pitches it as a paid relay, pitches spam filtering and whatnot, charges ~4K-5k sats per admission, get’s around 1k users. Making about 500000 sats.
Then closed the server and goes home.
Would getting 1k users per relay be that hard to achieve? Is there a relay listing that rates relays? Like member.cash rates profiles?

This is why I thought paid relays wasn't the best idea.
I do think we should be paying people who are literally supporting the infrastructure that runs this platform. But we should also be doing something about cases like these, as I said a member.cash type service for relays should be help us avoid a lot of this.
It's good if it ends up just closing the repeater... Nothing prevents them from just sending a bunch of spam messages to the global channel at some point. After all, the one who pays for a paid repeater, then puts it on to receive global network messages. Usually there is no spam in such a stream, since spammers do not want to pay. But if spammers own a relay, the rules of the game change.
But again, the scheme you described is unlikely to be accepted by spammers. It requires costs (advertising relay + time and effort). If they do all this, they are heroes. They will raise a hen laying golden eggs, which it would be strange to kill. Most likely they will be re-educated and stop being spammers. In addition, it is easy for users to disable the relay. If it is closed, the user can accept this fact for himself as a temporary subscription that has ended.
