Privacy-protecting alternatives:

iPhone -> Google Pixel

iOS -> GrapheneOS

iCloud Photos -> Ente

iCloud Drive -> Proton Drive

iCloud Mail -> Proton Mail

Passwords and Keychain -> Bitwarden or Proton Pass

Notes -> Standard Notes (Proton)

iCloud Calendar -> Proton Calendar

Do not use Google services as some are not end-to-end encrypted.

Self-host if you can and know what you’re doing.

And for the love of god. Please use Signal. Stop using Apple Messages.

Do you have any guides on how to self host things by any chance? 🐇🕳️

Start9 and Umbrel are good starting points if you’re not super technical. You can buy their server hardware and it mostly works out of the box. They have guides on how to set everything up.

What I did was buy a cheap ThinkPad laptop off Amazon and installed Start9’s StartOS. It has the benefit of having an integrated screen, portability, and a battery if power goes out. This worked better for me as I live in an apartment and like being minimalist.

I totally love Joplin. At the moment I host it at OneDrive, because Joplin is end-to-end encrypted by it's own. But I'll move it soon to my Nextcloud

Oh cool. Joplin + self-hosted Nextcloud sync sounds neat. I might try that instead of Standard Notes. Standard Notes requires a subscription for more advanced features.

Yeah, that was one reason to go with Joplin.

I few month ago I switched, after a decade from the iphone to Android.

So I need new Apps. I was looking to replace the iphone apps with open source apps on the Android. I tried many apps over weeks. For the notes app I decided to use Joplin, but for me it was the best. Open source, encrypted, no subscription etc. And I can use it on my phone, tablet, Windows and Linux PC.

And I can export all of my notes into different data types. If I ever wanna switch to another app it would be really easy.

Just to be clear to anyone considering switching, if you get a Google Pixel, the stock OS is not particularly privacy-protecting (although it's likely better than e.g. Samsung's). You need to install GrapheneOS yourself once you get the phone.

How is Google pixel any better?

If you install graphene on it, it's pretty dang secure.

It’s currently the most secure Android device on the market, but you need to install GrapheneOS to make that setup effective.

Is there something special about the pixel over the other android?

Is google pixel better?

If you install GrapheneOS, yes.

yes follow you. fully agree;)

Better yet: self-host your stuff

Yes!

What about Photoprism instead of iCloud Photos?

I’ve never tried it. It’s self-hosted but does not support end-to-end encryption. So as long as it’s on a server that you trust and exclusively control, it should be fine, if you don’t fear the government or somebody else breaking in and seizing your server / hard drive.

Notesnook is a good alternative to standard notes

How do you sync your pics with Ente?

Migrate existing photos: https://help.ente.io/photos/migration/from-apple-photos/

Sync new photos:

1. Tap albums icon (second icon) on bottom bar.

2. Tap “Recents”.

3. Toggle “Backup” to be enabled.

Thanks 🤗

And how do you host it?

I use their cloud solution currently, not self-hosted. Mostly because my home server sometimes has uptime issues and I need a bigger hard drive.

I know that uptime issues. I've the same problems, but they're "okay"

But I'll use other hardware and reinstall everything soon. I hope it'll get better then.

Ente for the win! #opensource

Btw for passwords I suggest you don't store full passwords in pwd app as bitwarden ( none are safe )
