For what it’s worth, I don’t think AI is pure hype. At least not in followup versions, not speaking about the current thing.

If we are talking about the current chatGPT then I think it’s a bit overhyped. It’s useful, but seems to be getting nerfed now. If this continues it will be mostly a useless toy.

I hope we are not dumb enough to cap the potential too quickly. The real benefits may come in v5 or v6.

In terms of startup valuations I definitely think there’s too much hype and too much money being thrown around too early. But I am not expert at these things. The real benefits may be down the road.

Gradually then suddenly

Bullish on personal AI and private data storage. The de-clouding will continue

I've used Linux in the command line since 2000 but I've never done it as a job professionally just as a hobby. I always struggle with getting email set up for notifications on server status. chatGPT just help me do it through basically a conversational style instruction set. it's like having a tutor that doesn't get tired of me asking it questions. Even if it is limited at the moment I'm still very much enjoying it.

My issue is with the media-friendly name. It's not "intelligence" - at least not from what I've seen. The current bots simply compile information very quickly in a pleasant format. That's not any more intelligent than a child reciting his "baltimore catechism" in the 1960's. Regurgitating what's already been said isn't intelligence.

Until I see a bot actually derive an idea on its own, "AI" is simply an elegant compiler, like a fancy TI handheld calculator for words, except far more dangerous in that the TI manufacturers had to produce a chipset that hewed to a very strict set of rules, while those who feed "AI" may choose to feed it whatever claptrap they feel is "important", and worse, may eschew that information that isn't considered to be "helpful to the advancement of humankind", ie. subjective.

I see "AI" as a ruse, much like early days "religion" (see the the Bible's Book of Leviticus, if you need help sleeping at night) whereby someone decides to invoke a "higher authority" to impose rules on the "simpletons" "for their own good". Since the state-controlled media has completely lost it's cache, those intent on keeping the "simpletons" at bay need a new form of "messiah" to keep the proletariat in order.

hence: "well, the "AI" said to do this and the "AI' knows everything, so....on your knees, proles!"

plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose

Eh, I use chat GPT every day for research. Better than google as I’m not just being thrown ads.

That being said, company valuations are so over inflated, it’s all a ruse. That or it’s a money laundering scheme for rich people to make a turn around and wash some funds.

Chat GPT free version has information only till 2021. Google Bard makes up stats.

Research cannot be solely dependent on these.

I use Chat GPT to understand concepts but am still dependent on good ol' Google search :(

Unfortunate. Google and other search engines struggle to resist the urge to shove products and location base information down my throat while I search for obscure things

Sadly yes. I wish there was a way to stop sharing our data. Like opting out plus as soon as we log out out our data is deleted from the server.

Phat chance anyone actually deletes your data. POPI act or not, I don’t think I’ve seen anyone actually do it

I deleted my Facebook (not Meta) account because it was sharing my data with 300+ organisation

The “App Settings” page allows you to see all the apps that have access to your Facebook account

To do this, open your Facebook account and go to the “Settings” menu, and then click “Apps and Websites.”

It’s wild. I deleted my Facebook account a few years back. I couldn’t handle the constant monitoring, censorship and product placements. Along with the fact that details of my life were just being sold
