The premise of the movie Bugonia is that two conspiracy theorists (led by Jesse Plemons) kidnap a pharmaceutical CEO (Emma Stone) because they think she's an alien.

We watched it last night, and had mixed thoughts.

-It was notably darker than I thought, which is neither good nor bad but in kind of a "dark comedy" genre it was lower on comedy and higher on darkness than I would've guessed. Scenes were more violent and tense than I had expected them to be.

-I was entertained throughout, in the sense that I enjoyed watching it and was curious how it would end, if everyone would be alright or not, comedic or tragic ending, etc.

-The acting was great all around, and particularly from Plemons. No complaints about cinematography or the score.

-I felt the writing/dialogue could be a stronger. Much of it comes down to Stone's character debating with Plemon's character, the back-and-forth that they go through, and it wasn't super riveting imo.

-I have another criticism but it's a spoiler to talk about it. In general, I feel that the narrative kind of "cheats" in a sense, where details and plot points don't necessarily line up as well as they could.

Definitely glad I watched it. Was curious about this one.

Have you seen any of his other films?

Fwiw I think this one is a remake of an old South Korean movie

I saw The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer, and disliked both.

I liked this more than those two.

Very intrigued

Yorgos Lanthimos has such an interesting filmography. Dogtooth is one of my favorites. It’s about a family living in extreme isolation, where the parents teach their children about the world in a completely twisted, alternative way. I highly recommend it.

Watched it twice because it was intense.

Too gory for me.

Plemons stole the show. Should have been nominated as main actor.

Thank you for no spoilers!

like it a lot. Kind of dual view..

aliens brought life to earth and we failed OR an allegory of an already failed "humanity"

Funny, watched it the other day and was kinda meh in the end. Started strong, but didn't really care for the lead up to the end. Felt it could have done way more with the cool premise

I was high when watched it 😂

(this should be "spoiler" hidden)

Yes. I would have love to have seen the movie where either (a) of course she wasn't an alien and we were telling a tragic story about delusion brought on by trauma, or (b) she was an alien and that was actually treated kinda seriously, in an "X-files" kinda way.

Instead, nope, it's all a joke and you (the audience) are stupid for caring about any of this. Boo. 😵

Yeah, I don't know that I agree with your takeaway, but I began to lose interest towards the end, was annoyed by how things played out, and the very end was neat but I was no longer invested and just happy to see the style of the reveal, and have it be over

Just realized you mighta been telling me that MY post contained spoilers, is that right? If so, apologies. Don't actually yet know how to do the spoiler hiding thing 😅

No I don't consider that spoilers... You good 😊

me not good 😁

I liked it. If spoiler then sorry. Can't delete notes 🫂

Oh but you can...there's a tool for that

which one??

nostr:npub1aeh2zw4elewy5682lxc6xnlqzjnxksq303gwu2npfaxd49vmde6qcq4nwx made a "nuking" tool the other day that I haven't tried yet. Of course, some relays may ignore, so your claim is likely still accurate, but might be worth checking out.

It’s not guaranteed to work with every relay, but it gives you more coverage than your client’s (request) delete button (if it even has one).

100% agree with what I imagine your take is on the "spoiler" aspect of this. I felt cheated as well.

I'm probably not "literary" enough to be using the "postmodern" seriously but... This felt way too postmodern for my tastes.

Movie reviews? And they say Nostr is just a bitcoin and freedom oriented echo chamber. 🤣 (Must say, I dont follow Lyn here for her thoughts on movies or pop culture. I am hoping one day she will engage here on the macro-investing part of her life. She posts what she wants, but what shows up here really is not of much or any value to me.)

Thank you very much for the recommendation! I haven't seen it yet, but I've added it to my list, just like I did with One Battle After Another yesterday! 😎

This movie was bleak, preachy, and fundamentally anti human.

I love both of them, I’ll check it out

Very rare that I avail my attention and consciousness to a movie these days.

I’m always willing and hopeful - but I just have to be SURE it’s worth it.

Otherwise I’d rather just watch a nature show like planet earth.

I've never heard of that movie, Bugonia. I'll watch it if I can find it. Thanks for the tip.

I have a hard time watching movies nowadays, because in the back of my mind I'm thinking it's some kind of propaganda or has some sort of agenda. Also I hate how dark, violent and crude movies have become. It's sad because teenagers and young adults watch this stuff, and I'm sure it influences their mind

Love your reviews. I’ve only been thru half of this so I’ll have to dive back in

Agree. Good enough we made it to the end but not something to see again
