uhhh stupid question but somebody just made it seem like if I use the sats that I get here on nostr in a real world or internet transaction those LN sats could be tracked back to this SerSleepy npub

my intuition is telling me it’s not possible but wtf do I know

is it possible or not ?

they claim you have to off ramp the sats from here to swap into a future feature of some app called cake that will let you do swaps with XMR then you swap to another XMR wallet then you swap back to LN in order to not have your social identity from nostr be known in a future LN purchase or transaction..

idk where tf they get this from just seems to dumb to me but idk you tell me

this is the thread where I saw the claim

nostr:note1fnaqa5zm2uwq44jnye78w9pzz7zu53zmm54dhawyxvtgpa6zg37qltgm57

ok 5 mins have gone by and nobody has replied, I guess the conclusion is that it’s such a dumb question it’s not really worth answering 🀣🀣🀣

I wouldn't worry about that, and def would not go to the trouble off swapping to another coin. If you want to you can probably send to an ecash wallet and pay from there.

right but there’s no way you can tell from my LN receiving address what my npub is or could you ?

Just knowing that no, don't know if with the tx info there's something to know, I doubt it, but i really don't know. But Alby obv knows.

I was wondering the same with Nostr and Strike

Maybe? It depends on what wallet you are using. Is it a doxxed wallet? Custodial?

only doxxed in the sense that it’s my receiving address on here

& yes it’s an nostr:npub1getal6ykt05fsz5nqu4uld09nfj3y3qxmv8crys4aeut53unfvlqr80nfm wallet

Ok, so what email address did you use when you set it up? Any connection back to either your IRL identity or sleepy nym?

Do you use a VPN when you connect to the alby site? They are probably not tracking you but the server probably has a log of your IP address

I think I used one of my oldest emails ngl.. not the best opsec there

and no VPN ever used

Ok. It would probably be too much trouble to run down someone for $50 in zaps but if they wanted to they could.

What if a random citizen that just happens to life in a country that sponsors terrorism zapped you? What if you zapped them? What if some 3 letter wants to track down every single cent that β€œsupports” terror funding?

Not very likely and Yes I am being extremely extra but just thinking of what ifs.

If you are not going to be 100% on your opsec hygiene then maybe go with a wallet that doesn’t ask for information? Or break the link with fedimints or ecash address?

yeah I gotta get onboard with the trade offs of easy to use to more privacy focused solutions, I’m just so used it being easy n efficient but the risks outweigh the efficiency n easy to use for sure, thanks ghost πŸ«‚πŸ€

No problem. I am not trying to freak you out. You are most likely fine. I am sure that you are a law abiding citizen that a government has no interest in and you and I are not getting the scrutiny or interest that Jack gets from people.

But just remember that data sticks around forever. One day in the far future even owning 500 sats could be a big deal. Bad actors could be very interested in the early days of generational wealth we causally zapped around.

A ounce of prevention and all that

Yeah it can be tracked, so long as an ip address can be associated with wallet activity. Top tiered privacy would include xmr.

If you absolutely need to remove any association can use npub.cash to accumulate and transfer to a new wallet that is unassociated with your identity. You could also transfer to a cashu wallet with nwc for zaps, but there needs some work there.

Not ironclad, but depending on what you're protecting against, might be enough.

well fuck

thanks liminal 🫑

You're good, top tiered privacy is something to work towards. You learn and build the walls as you go, filling in the cracks from the past as you see. πŸ«‚

Thank you fren πŸ«‚ appreciate you!!

Yeah, its important to understand what the realistic threat is that you are working with and build around that, anything more is just giving you extra work.

Though it is probably healthy to play around with a more extreme possibilities to see where you can improve on for your privacy and security. Thats the idea though - play, assume you're in uncharted territory and play carefully until you have your bearings.

I move sats to my LN node and then use them from there.

one day I’ll have an LN node πŸ«‚

You basically have zero privacy from alby or any custodial lightning provider for that matter.

They know all incoming and outgoing amounts + who you're sending to + your ip address.

And your lnurl is "sersleepy@getalby.com" so it wouldn't be too hard to figure out your nostr account if they dont already know 🀣

Even if you trust alby they can be forced to give up info against their will by authorities, or have their databases hacked, or accidentally leaked

Custodial lightning sucks so bad for privacy.

Solution: Use ecash and make lightning payments out of the mint (behind a tor or a good vpn to mask your ip) then youre pretty solid πŸ‘Œ

Minibits wallets gives you your own built-in lnurl, that you can also customize, that you can replace with the one you have here (people will zap u with lightning and it will convert to ecash tokens)

You can also do the same thing with: https://npub.cash

btw for the ecash lnurl stuff they'll still know incoming zap amounts...but won't know any future outgoing lightning payments were you (as long as you're behind a vpn/tor)

Still better privacy to transact with ecash tokens directly (opposed to sending/receiving lightning payments), but the way I decribed is still a lot better than how you're doing it right now with alby
