OMG we need polls where you have to pay like 100 sats (or whatever) to vote.

This will literally correct a major problem that skews polls on social media.

I mention because I’m about to release another Meme soon, but it’s only 30 seconds, and was intended as a part of a larger project (about 2 minutes). I wanted to poll people on whether I should move into the next project or see the one I’m about to drop to its next form.

Polls on #Nostr could be really interesting and far more useful (some degree of skin in the game) than normal social polls. 🤔

No. You do not need to monetize free speech.

That's right, you don't need, but you CAN. That's what freedom is about.

💯

You paid to say this though

No, I didn’t.

Yep. Pay to poll on a private users feed which is not monetizing free speech but a rough fix to a bot spam problem is no different than you paying your isp to post the above reply. Paying for a voluntary opt in service is ok it is not an attack on peoples speech or freedom further there would also be nothing stopping you from setting a poll at a zero fee rate. Lastly if you are zapped for a good comment, thought or critique would you be monetizing speech or accepting value for value again voluntarily.

As long as you keep the free option I’m good. I’m capable to decide on my own on whether or not to comment, boost, like or ZAP

Yes! I want to see paid polls

I can decide on my own whether I like a post, comment on it, boost it or ZAP it. Don’t need to pay for free speech thank you. That will kill Nostr in a minute.

How would this possibly require anyone to "pay for free speech?" I'm talking about spam prevention for polls so the results are more meaningful.

It's basically hashcash for public polling.

So, does the price go up if it’s an important poll that someone may be interested in skewing? If that someone is really interested in skewing it, would their bots pay the hashcash?

Doesn't this only skew things in other undesirable ways?

Here is the zap polls Damus feature request and user story: https://github.com/damus-io/damus/issues/402

⚡️

Ability to set fee would be great from 0 for unimportant fun things to whatever 100k perhaps for serious depending on author with sats going to devs somehow so a funding mechanism

Pay-to-comment would also be nice.

Even better, allow the poll creator to set the Sat amount 🍻

Even even better, you can set custom sat amounts for each response so you can get the results that you want.

That's what I was meaning. The example was just that, not a rule on how it would work.

Ahh yes, the old landowners get to vote paradigm, think that usually ends well historically…

Poll:

How much would you pay for a Poll?

A: 0 sats

B: 100 sats

C: 500 sats

D: 1000 sats

This poll has a fee of 100'000 sats.

*too lazy to insert fake invoice.

“Trending “ topics are what I’m interested in seeing on a neutral platform

and you think paying to vote would remove bias?... no way ... it'll add another bias

Agree, it might help with bots but would create a different type of bias

No, not remove bias, but remove the noise of the cheapest opinions.

So, with enough money you can game a meaningless poll on NOSTR ?

It would be better to have a "sybil" diagnostic of each voting option to know what actually happened.

• I wouldn't suggest this is a panecea that solved problems I didn't specifically mention

• for **free** right now you can game as many polls right now on social media as you like, indefinitely.

polls are especially meaningless in nostr because there's no "sign up". the pollster can flood his own poll with his own money in your example.

Yes, he could do it for free, but it doesn't give you what you're after which is signal.

To find signal you have to analyse each vote to know how likely it is that it is a vote from a unique entity and then tally from there. Sats don't solve your problem at all, nostr can solve it.

In Irwin Schiff’s “How and economy grows and why it doesn’t” he successfully argues in the span of 3 comic book pages for why paying to vote makes sense.

Some quotes (since I can’t seem to post a picture:

- “if a vote costs nothing, it’s worth nothing.”

- “the ignorant and irresponsible will vote if it’s free, and such votes are dangerous.” (followed by picture of people voting based on looks or just selecting at random)

- “in government if you want a say, then you’ve got to pay.”

- “some of the islanders, of course, would not have given even one fish let alone five, to promote economic and social Justice! Fortunately, they did not have a voice in the island’s government!”

- “And so. With the enforcement of just laws. And the court system enforcing contracts and disputes among tradesmen, trade was facilitated, and this further increased the division of labor, increasing economic benefits for all… taxpayers and non taxpayers alike!”
