I will zap something that I think is an important thing to say or particularly funny.
Zaps are the real likes .. we are just not there yet ..
I use 🤙🏻as a sort of, “I concur” and⚡️ for value.
Sometimes I just do it to see my name as top zapper under what might be a popular post.
Both likes and zaps have a cost to the person zapping or liking, the cost is time, but zaps transfer that value instead of burning it.
For some people the time it takes to like a note is worth much more than 1 sat, for most I think it's the opposite.
Other than that I see no difference between them.
🤙 = I see you
⚡️ = I *really* see you, I find what you shared valuable, and want to give you value back and publicly signal with my sats that I find this valuable.
🔁 = I see you and want others to see you, too (if I repost I always zap, because why would I repost it if I didn’t find it valuable?)
For me if a post has value to me at all, it's going to get at least a like if I see it. The higher the signal, the more propensity to get a zap. Amount of zaps depend more on what I've budgeted for a day of zapping and testing, but I make exceptions for posts I find to be unique perspectives for sure. Overall, outside of zapathons and testing, its all very subjective.
It’s entirely whimsical right now. Only in the retrospect of my experience might I find reason.
Too early to say. We all have our own instincts around these primitives of social interaction. The ⚡️zap is still so new there’s a lot of novelty around it’s use case still which makes discerning the underlying instinctive context tricky still. Combine that with how early we are in the journey of satoshis finding their ultimate value and this is a thing that will surely be redefined again and again. Years from now we will certainly still be assessing the behavior with such a powerful direct interaction.

For me a like is an acknowledgement that I have read a note and I appreciate their time in writing it and their thoughts on the topic. A zap is for a note that has evoked an emotion, any emotion. Zap is also for those notes that have made me stop and consider something, or has taught me something new, or has promoted a thought/cause I believe in.
I like that way of looking at it. If it evokes an emotion, ⚡. If you appreciate the time but it didn't evoke anything, ❤️. Good rule of thumb.

Agreed! I wish I had thought of that when writing the note, as I prefer to let people know in advance that I'll be sending a ⚡ for the replies. As it is I've been sending a ⚡ for the responses I most resonate with or appreciate.
For me likes or pv’s are a way to notify (and reward the OG poster with dopamine) that your contribution has been noticed.
For me it should be a pv or like that contributes to the OG with more than just dopamine, therefore, the pv or like should add real value through sats, like a default zap of 1 sat (changeable in settings).

A ❤️ is a cheap social incentive to highlight a desire for more of what was posted while a⚡️is a financial incentive. A ⚡️ is like a super ❤️ because it actually costs me to boost them. Am I willing to lose something to ask for more of what was posted? If yes I zap.
It's also a little novel right now so I likely am doing it more than I normally would. We will see.

I always find it psychologically difficult to like a note. I'm afraid the author will be offended by the like. After all, a zap is much nicer! Perhaps it would be better if there were no likes at all, and notes could only be evaluated with zaps.
I hear that. I'm not there yet, though. I think Likes play an important sentiment role to let the author know they're moving in a direction you appreciate, whereas zaps let them know they've really hit the mark. I could be wrong, though. In a Bitcoin standard world perhaps likes will disappear because value-4-value has become so strong. 🤷
Likes are faster, too. Unless I'm missing something, zaps require more than just a single click, right? Mine have to first specify the amount, connect to my wallet, add an optional note, then hit "Send"...

If the post is something novel where I believe the person brought new value, then ⚡.
If I like the sentiment or opinion and would like to show support, then 💜.
Giving a like for me is similar to giving a nod in a conversation, it means I either agree or appreciate the input, even if I disagree.
Zaps are for when something really resonates with me or I want to reward the person for what they wrote. It is more costly in time for me since I have to restart my LN wallet, type in my pin-code and then send the zap. If I zap something then that means I was motivated to do all of that.😄
