Omega 3s, intermittent fasting, exercise, sleep, what else?
You nailed it. Sleep, diet, exercise.
Avoiding toxins like alcohol in excess, tobacco, drugs is important. I see a lot of trauma so wear your seatbelts, helmets, etc.
I know you’re all carnivores here, but the Mediterranean diet has the best evidence behind it for heart and brain health.
Med diet here doc 🤙🫂
Same 🤙 I need to cut out the sweets and alcohol though, that’s my weakness.
Have you seen Secret of the Blue Zones? I just watched the first episode, it was on the diet of the people of Okinawa, and it’s pretty good.
I was actually going to bring that up in my previous note! We just finished Sardinia.
I have the odd beer, or scotch. Sweets, not really. I love cured meats though, but we are pretty much on the Mediterranean diet otherwise.
Nice! I’ll try to watch Sardinia this weekend How was it?
It was great!
Sourdough bread, steep hills, lots of walking, vegetable soup, seafood. Simple stuff, right?
Yea, the thing that blew my mind in the Okinawa episode was that they don’t use chairs. Getting up and down from tatami mats on the floor is basically like doing 30 squats a day and keeps them strong. I see so many elderly people in the US die from falls (broken leg, hip, head bleed, etc).
Balance and strength 🤙
So true!
I spent time there w the centenarians. Steep hills, intermittent fasting (they didn’t have a lot of food as children but had a positive demeanor about it leave the table a little hungry’ vs we don’t have food), close interpersonal relationship, music, improv poetry, joking / not taking selves too seriously, 500+ varieties of veggies specific to Sardinia. The centenarians live in the center of the island bc the coasts were often conquered. So they eat pork, lamb, cheese not fish like blue zone diets often assume.
That must have been a wonderful experience!
The best. Also visited Ikaria. The trees/plants in the yards = their medicine. They also have dances that go all night in different villages around the island. 90 year olds dancing until sunrise. Wild!
Light environment is very important too. Your circadian clock thrives with morning sunlight and blocked blue light (bright white artificial light) after sunset (or always if you can).
