As a white American I never gave much thought to my heritage.

Despite the fact that my grandmother immigrated from Ireland when she was 17 which makes me only a 2nd generation American.

It just never factored for me for whatever reason.

Now that I’m older I realize I’m proud to be Irish.

And I’m proud of the fact that I’m a little bit crazy like a good Irishman should be lol

Felt this.

Think it was by design.

They didn’t want us knowing the real history of things.

Absolutely. Americans are waking up from a long mass media induced brainwashing campaign.

I've cared on and off over the years. When I found out I had relatives that came over from England in 1630 when they were 19 and 20, I thought that was pretty amazing that they would risk the seas to go somewhere they would probably die within a couple of years to make a life for themselves.

I'm a 2nd gen Canadian, and I'm proud of maniacally moving my hands while talking, like a good Italian would.

Just sent you a DM. You’re eligible for an Irish passport if you haven’t already got one.

Yeah I know I’ve been meaning to get on that. It’s on my to do list.

Same

Feel free to DM with questions. Only ~$315 and 9 months once received. Passport in hand another 2 months. If already have kids, then they can get citizenship at the discretion of the minister of justice through multiple law firms that specialize in it.

The Irish have a significant history of trauma at the hands of the English, once I learned about it in depth I couldn’t help but see the effects of these inter generational traumas in my own family. To walk around as an unattached American when I’m directly dealing with the consequences of this ancestral burden is a special kind of uniquely American hubristic arrogance which I held for far too many years.

You can’t outrun the past.

You can’t get away from your dna. I feel the same way about being Italian

I used to believe in nurture over nature. Then I had kids and now I think it’s 90% genetics.

At least 90%

Proud Viking. Because it suits me and the DNA apparently confirms it.

I see myself as a first generation american and I immigrated here a couple years ago.

That would make your grandma first and you third.

Yeah you’re right it’s third gen.

I think there should be some distinction between being grateful or having appreciation for things we are given or for the people who came before us, & things like actual achievements that we might take pride in.

Words are messy tho.

But it's similar to when people say "we won" after they watch sports... All I can think is mf you didn't do or win anything.

When it becomes socially acceptable to take pride in things that you had nothing to do with, lots of really sad & ineffectual people pump themselves up with weak associations to stuff outside of themselves & then become tyrants... See the woke movement.

Definitely agreed. That said failure to play the identity politics game is an automatic loss. Unfortunately we’ve all been forced to participate whether we like it or not.

White heritages are real and should be recognized and embraced has much as anyone else’s. Lots of folks in this country would be psychologically better off if they had a better relationship with their heritage beyond whatever lame homogenized and McDonaldized version America feeds them…

Idk, I think being on the recieving end of these rather constant social attacks makes us stronger & more aware of who we really are, while the rest become soft & actually completely lose who they are without the context & support of their social group. It's like an anti-fragility thing. I don't think playing the collectivist game really makes us stronger.

I think tools for better coordination are critically important (bitcoin, nostr, keet, etc) & the others mostly just trade genuine coordination for mindless following & group think. One is empowering & the other is disempowering. You can be destructive with mindless collectivism & that can appear powerful in a way, but it really isn't. Real power is productive.

True at an individual level. At a societal level impossible not to play the game.

So what does that look like?

To put it bluntly it means the winning cultural identity will be dominant over others.

But culture follows the successful. That's why the current culture is shit, because fiat success is devoid of merit. Bitcoin solves the cultural problem almost by itself, it just takes time.

I’m not sure culture follows the successful. Look at Asian American families. They outcompete almost everyone by placing a strong focus on family and education and yet their success is not replicated by other American demographics.

That 2 people had sex and I was the result is just nothing I ever took pride in. It’s kind of like being 7’ tall, young, healthy and being able to slam a basketball. That’s just winning the genetic lottery.

[ I’m 5’5”, so perhaps I’m just jealous :) ]

I have no idea of the genetic makeup of my heritage other than we look white and the last name is Thornton; so I assume we came from the UK - though I really don’t care.

I’m also the oldest of 5. The middle sibling was adopted from S. Korea. For most of my life she has been my favorite and I’ve always considered her just as much of a “real” sibling as my Caucasian biological siblings.

I just kind of hate the division and the tribal aspect of a lot of this.

Which is why it amused me when Sunny Hostin from The View found out her ancestors owned slaves and she had to admit she’s disappointedZ

Why? Why should your ancestor’s actions affect your status or emotional state?

Okay .. IRISH HODL 0.o

The Irish Famine was planned depopulation by the British. The Irish are crazy alright and mostly drunks who accomplished nothing in my family. I'm going with Lithuanian ... blue eyed dreamers who always look to the sea.

HODL - not sure if you knew this but you can get Irish citizenship thru your grandmother. My dad got it thru his grandmother using her baptismal records. The Irish in him (and me) is definitely crazy. You can’t escape it. He reconnected with a college girlfriend who’d been living in the UK for forty years so his Irish passport came in handy since he now lives across the pond.

Yeah I know! and I’ve been meaning to get an Irish passport at some point

You should get Irish citizenship if you can.

Was your granny one of the HODLs from just outside Ahascragh in County Galway? A sound bunch, great hurlers, mad for the craic.

Dual-citizenship bro. Get it. In the process of doing it myself.

where to?

😂 fair enough.... I deserved that one. I've been looking at options in Latin America, none seem easy.

Lol…start with “by descendant” Irish German, French, Italian, Spanish etc. if you don’t qualify, you can go the golden visa route. No, these things are not easy because you’re dealing with sealed records and having to go through government agencies. I knew a guy it took him 12 years to finally get his second citizenship.

Greetings from Ireland! 🤝
