I saw some people on Twitter complaining about seeing Chinese writing on nostr, and saying they uninstalled because of it, and my reaction simply COULD NOT BE more different. Is there anyone in the *world* who faces more aggro network-filtering than the Chinese? If nostr works for Chinese folks, it'll work for everybody. I hope I see more Chinese on here, not less.

(But a "translate" button would be nice)

Nostr, where free and censored people can meet

Twitter, where the freeish people can bitch about the censored.

"We need open protocols!"

"Not THAT open!!!"

all are welcome

Yeah, good thing is that we are seeing progress on making Nostr better and better, eventually every single creator will focus on accessibility for those joining. Now we need to show the world this could be a thing. ❤️

#[1] translate button is available to Damus users if they set a LibreTranslate server in settings. That seems like a pretty lame reason to uninstall. I love that this social network is global, and why I’ve invested the entire last month localizing Damus. More diverse conversations and opinions is where we win in humanity. We should be encouraging better multi-language support in the protocol and clients.

Agree, it's amazing to see finally the whole world being able to connect without any form of censorship via content "moderation" or surpession via algos etc. Never have I seen so interesting conversations like here with freedom loving people from allover the world ❤️

Google Translate team reporting for duty.

我在 Twitter 上看到一些人抱怨在 nostr 上看到中文,并说他们因此而卸载了,我的反应完全不同。 *世界*中有谁比中国人面临更多的网络过滤攻击? 如果 nostr 对中国人有效,那么它对每个人都有效。 我希望我能在这里看到更多的中国人,而不是更少。

(但是“翻译”按钮会很好)

The whole point of a platform like this is to have conversations with the rest of the world

TMW the racists censor themselves 🤣

Everyone around the world can share whatever they want without being Censored or Deboosted, why the hell they're not able to understand the gravity of this thing? Wow

Ideally the tool would detect the language automatically or even better the protocol could have a locale stored next to the text (there are some standards like "en-US", but it's a tricky space) and so the language is stored at the time of posting.

The app could use system locale to set this and users should be able to select in settings which languages they want to see.

🤝 nostr is for everyone

#[2] recently added translations with LibreTranslate to snort.social, I hope more clients start doing this.

💯

Translate is in Damus and I think snort

#[3] you are helping on snort design, right? We will add you to the list then. Do you have a github profile to share?

https://uselessshit.co/resources/nostr/#the-list

Yea I help with design. Don’t do much on GitHub really. Can link to my profile here 🫂

Will be added with the next update 💜

💜 💜

You should add https://www.nostr.how to the list as well. 🤙

And Iris

Let me know if you need a hand translating Iris to Italian. I'm american but have been living in Italy for 13 years

We really need a good Italian translation for Amethyst -- will contribute ⚡⚡⚡ as incentive 😃

Can you add "Translate with DeepL" `? Its the best translator (based on AI) so far. using it privately for years now

The amethyst client on android does on the fly translations (although I'm sure it's reaching out to a 3rd party with all of that data).

I am using Amethyst, and automatically translates the posts to Spanish. The other languages are translated to English;).

The orientals have found our network

No cap

No cap, #balloon

I have Google translate on my browser.  I just highlight the subject text and it gives me a pretty good translation.

Ok but a translate button need to be pointed somewhere...Google translate? I don't want Google on nostr, neither Microsoft

Translation based on Deepl would be way better than actual Twitter translation

It's a good barometer to see if they mean "Freedom for me" or "Freedom for all"

Translate button requires an AI and expensive hardware. Since nostr is a decentralized network that nobody owns, no one has the incentive to create such a free service. A paid service that dings you twenty sats per screen would probably make loads of money as the nostr network grows.
