#AskNostr

QUESTION for any audio engineers/sound aficionados/podcast savants on Nostr: will there be a significant/noticeable difference switching from a Shure MV7 USB mic plugged directly into my Mac to a Shure SM7B + mixer/interface (e.g. RODECaster Pro)?

I tried out the Shure SM7dB (the one with built-in pre-amp, not the standard SM7B,) plugged into my Mac via XLR-to-USB adapter, but I found the pre-amp added a ton of background buzz (maybe a shitty adapter?) and I still liked the sound on my old MV7… so I’m going to return the SM7dB, but I’m wondering if it’s worth it to splurge on a standard SM7B + mixer/interface or if I should just stick with my trusty MV7 setup with USB connection to Mac… For anyone using an SM7B: do you like it? What mixer do you recommend?

The SM7B is not that much more expensive than the MV7, but buying a decent quality mixer makes it a lot pricier… Still just a one man show here so trying to figure out if I should just bite the bullet and upgrade… Any advice greatly appreciated.

I think quality wise..interface will win. I'd go that route.

Seems I just need to bite the bullet…

Yep, focusrite scarlet is what I see everywhere,, and I have 1 in my travel kit for the inevitable remote presenter.

📝

Focusrite is your friend.

My Cloudlifter went bananas and I moved off the SM7-B to a Universal Audio SD-1 and am very happy. That said, I already have UA interfaces and their unison plugins have enough gain to bring up the SD-1.

If you’re using the SM7-dB, it might be worth looking into an entry-level (price not quality) audio interface, like a M-Audio or Focusrite. The benefits here are you can add a nice pair of studio monitors down the line if you want.

You can certainly move up from there for better A/D/A conversion into the UA, RME or MOTU stuff.

There are a lot of acronyms in here that I’ll need to look up later… but thank you very much for the input 🙏

Classical music recording engineer here. Your podcast sounds great because you use good mic technique. Upgrading to an SM7B and an interface will probably yield diminished returns (unless you just enjoy it that much more) and add setup time.

If I were in your shoes, I would start looking into an interface when you would like to put some distance between you and your computer, as in a live sit-down talk. Grab some more cabling, and you may host as many people as you have channels and mics for. I recommend an interface that records to SD cards for field recordings - I hate dealing with computers in the field, but that's just me.

Hope that helps, and thanks for making another fucking Bitcoin podcast just for me.

I really appreciate this feedback.

I’ve been trying to work on my mic technique as much as possible (when I remember to), so it’s good to know that translates.

Also a great point about the setup for virtual recording versus in-person. My setup now is SUPER simple and quick—I don’t need to think about it at all—and also extremely portable. But for future interviews I might do in person I will definitely need a more upgraded setup.

Thank you for taking the time to give such a thoughtful answer 🙏

Hey anytime. I'm glad that it's a helpful frame of mind. I'm relatively new to recording at 8 years in, but I've accumulated sooooo much CRAP that I let myself be sold on, and I wish I had done things differently. I can record most of the orchestras around here with a 2008 Yaris-full of gear, so that makes me happy.

Like everything, clarity of mind is key. Simple is good.

I’m like 8 months in to podcasting so your 8 years of experience is greatly appreciated 🙏

This thread is greatly appreciated and i have virtually no connection to it. Just a really great thread. You guys R kewl

How many local mic inputs do you need?

Anything direct connected to the computer will likely have high noise (especially when it's a laptop and it's plugged into power) external sound cards help a lot, and most come with good mic preamps built in.

Best bang for buck is probably an external audio interface like a scarlet. Puts all your audio i/o outside the noisy computer and gives you flexible physical cable routing for different scenarios.

Tbh most of the nuance in mic selection and preamp selection (other than signal to noise) gets destroyed when encoded for broadcast on most settings, and the other poster is correct : it's mostly about mic technique, proximity effect, and basic eq to get the sound you want across different listening environments.

It's worth playing with different mics (keeping everything else the same) to find one you like with your voice with minimal eq needed, but there are so many other variables with broadcast encoding and analog to digital conversion that might impact things, if you really want to dig in we would have to discuss the whole signal path from voice to earholes

Greatly appreciate the feedback man 🙏🫡

The increased noise with the SM7dB makes a lot more sense now…

Re: mic technique, it’s honestly incredible how much a difference it makes… my plosives were out of control when I first started then I watched a 5 minute technique video and it improved drastically (still plenty of room for improvement but at least better than before).

I’ve honestly been pretty pleased with the MV7 overall since I’ve only been doing solo recordings and virtual interviews, but if I start doing them in person I’m definitely going to need to figure my shit out…

Also, love that you say “earholes.” I, too, say earholes.

Anyway, appreciate the insight brother

It’s a brand new mic, but you should look into the Lewitt RAY large diaphragm condenser mic.

It will sound way better than the SM7B and it has extra features where it auto changes the gain of the microphone depending on your proximity.

It’s like a camera with auto focus, it keeps your voice consistent. It also can be used as an auto mute. If you have to cough, just move away from the mic and it will automatically mute.

I have not personally used it, it just hit the market, but it looks like the perfect mic for podcasting. Especially if you’re not an audio engineer or have good mic technique.

👋 film mixer here. Getting a good interface with decent preamps, like a focusrite Scarlett would be worth a look.

If you want an interesting option:

I record a lot of foley, ADR, and VO. It all starts with performance and mic technique. Remember that you are recording the AIR between the microphone and the sound source.

And when all else fails, there iZotope RX 😂

Appreciate the feedback! It’s amazing how much of an impact mic technique has, and I’ve been trying to work on mine as much as possible (a little work on plosives can make a world of difference).

Thanks for the recs as well — will dig into these 🙏

Love your content. Hit me up if you ever need post audio services. Also, for portable recording without being tethered to a laptop, Sounddevices gear is great (and ubiquitous in the film industry).

My PoW:

I don’t notice any significant difference. In fact I had edited and/or finished recording a podcast on the SM7B and switched to the MV7 and it wasn’t noticeable unless you were REEAALLY paying attention to the audio.

The one recurring difference is honestly that my XLR cable in my stand has some connection issues (or maybe it’s my interface, not certain) and so it pops and breaks up sometimes. Frustrating enough that I think I’ll be switching back to the MV7 until I figure it out. Sucks because I do like my SM7B a lot.

This is really helpful and mirrors my experience with MV7 vs SM7dB. I’m sure one can achieve superior results with the SM7B/SM7dB versus the MV7, but the MV7 is just such a rock solid plug-and-play mic, especially for someone like me who is still pretty new to all of this. And the MV7 USB connection directly to my Mac has been super clean and reliable.

Very much appreciate the feedback, Guy — Bitcoin Audible has always been (and will always be) one of my go-to podcasts when I open up Fountain 🫂 appreciate you and all you do 🤙

I have the MV7 and SM7b they do sound similar but SM7b is more versatile and easier to use with the capsule set far back and better foam.

The sound quality also gets an upgrade through a good audio interface. I use it through my Rodecaster Pro and Volt276 through a cloudlifter.

But after a while I fell in love with the RE20 instead. That mic suits my voice much better.

The quality upgrade is not noticeable on podcast listening though, I would only notice a few difference here and there when scrutinizing my recording using an analytical headphone with good amps, but people listen to podcast on car bluetooth.

Combination of SM7B and the RodeCaster Pro II is AMAZING!

Would recommend it any time!

It's more on the pricey side, but sound is amazing...
