Before discovering nostr I was working on ideas for a social network with signed JSON and lightning addresses on profile too. But my idea used HTTP instead of WS and every user would have chosen a single server to use and "interactions" such as likes, follows, mutes and blocks were to be handled by that server. Also that one server would have hosted your files as well, kina like NextCloud
Nostr makes decentralization simple and efficient, thank you for your contribution #[2] 🫂💜
Yep. The “Satellite protocol” as I used to call it 🤣
nostr:npub1lunaq893u4hmtpvqxpk8hfmtkqmm7ggutdtnc4hyuux2skr4ttcqr827lj what about #nostr made you wanna switch to an entirely different protocol?
What was the state of your product (how deep were you) before you switched?
Do you have any sacrifices or setbacks to your product as a result?
The key thing was relays. Standardizing the transport layer to something simple and dumb. Digital signatures are the magic, transport just has to work.
The main thing about the old version of Satellite that I gave up switching to nostr was deep integration of BitTorrent (which is why I have been trying to make that a thing in nostr this whole time haha)
We should rename Nostr to "BitNotes" so it pairs better with Bitcoin and BitTorrent.
It's actually not a bad idea haha
nostorent … I’m so dumb.
What would bring to nostr?
A way to move media, not just metadata.
Of course. Then we wouldn’t need to upload images each to a single media relay … seems like nostr will move this direction? #nostorent
I don't wanna spoil anything but... nostr:npub1ye5ptcxfyyxl5vjvdjar2ua3f0hynkjzpx552mu5snj3qmx5pzjscpknpr
"It used to be based on ethereum. Nothing on-chain but just signing messages with eth addresses and distributing the data with torrents. In December I found out about nostr and realized that it was just a way better than fucking around with metamask so I rebuilt the whole thing for nostr"
Turned out to be a very good decision
If you can't beat 'em, join 'em
Me too, we stopped working on plantary.social to build nos.social on nostr.

Curious about others also…
nostr:npub1xtscya34g58tk0z605fvr788k263gsu6cy9x0mhnm87echrgufzsevkk5s had been working on something on activitypub too called ‘chibipub’… not sure on that name? Lol. I’ll let him respond about why he moved over
Damn, I forgot about you too!
The super funny thing is that old Satellite made it onto your list of previously attempted decentralized protocols (this is a picture I took of the slide during talk at nostrica). If you zoom in you can see 'satelite'. The lore of nostr goes deep 🤣

Oh, I didn't know. Very interesting indeed! Stronger together :D
I kept thinking "man! We need some sort of new social media deal that's not owned by big tech, like an email or RSS based system, maybe with some crypto type tech thrown in" for years before nostr.
And then you created Farcaster?
I kept looking. Stumbled upon Phoenix chat but could never get it to work, and the same with Element/Matrix. I never got the motivation to build it myself, but I might have attempted eventually.
It's the same with Bitcoin. I thought that money needed to be decentralized. I saw how credit card processors were the always middle man who would basically have half the money after just 20-30 transactions, and I thought to myself "psshhh! It's just a ledger! I can do better than that!" Then I found bitcoin and was like "dang! He beat me to it..."
What other things follow this pattern for you...so i can invest in them early 😆😆
For one, replacing the phone number system with an open protocol not captured by big tech.
Apparently, there's a NIP for that 😂
Oh yeah ? So how come Nostr get the speciality so widely?
And Martti Malmi too...
I think this note could be the answer.. many devs looking for the same solution, started to built on the same protocol.
Probably the answer is in the specific tech of #nostr itself, since it's easy to work on it, really open source, with an almost infinite possiblity of connection and more network effects.
Probably it's the first protocol were anyone can built his social graph without risking to be deplatformed, since there is no platform, only connections.
