Is Nostr Nests the same as Corny chat? Why are there 2 different things? /confused

Underlying software is the same 🐶🐾🫡

So corny chat is just a fork? But why?

They both are just forks of the same thing with a different wrapper. Because writing software that works is VERY hard! 🐶🐾🫡

but doesn't answer my question. Nests had all the people there, then all of a sudden I see the same people in Corny Chat. So they moved? or is nests still active? Just not clear.

Nests is still active and used. Some moved, some didn’t. Corny is trying to add features that nests didn’t have. And I think a bounty was involved too 🐶🐾🫡

Just to add a non-technical view of an idiot to the convo. Seemed like someone wanted a different, in my opinion, dumber name for a thing that already worked. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I could be wrong.

Nests a while back took 3 people to make a room visible so people could know you were there. (Pain to start and get people in a room unless you sent a lot of notes and invites.

Lots of audio glitches. No developer around to help.

Jam systems had updates that nests did not update.

The implementation of nests (from Jam systems) was closed source and people could not build upon nests to add tweeks.

Most have migrated to corny chat as the developer is almost always there and helpful.

Much funner environment.

I recommend using both and checking them out sometime, if you really want to know what they are about.

Social engagement is wise. Instead of just writing code and expecting someone to just use the code.

Implementing lightning tips for all users in corny chat is so nice also.

(Nests you only tip one developer)

So many new upgrades on a daily basis now.

I use it everyday (nearly) now and can count on people being in one room or another most times, and have watched it develop as Frank has described above. Nests no one is opposed to just seems to need work and to find its audience. I think it just reinforces how niche everything needs to be nowadays. It’s much more difficult to carve out mass appeal, than this alternative, seems obvious now.

Because Vic didn't want to work on Nests and decided to do his own fork. It's a bit odd but I'll guess it's because Semisol didn't want to open source his backed changes.

Yes. Exactly this. Vic wanted to work on improving nests but semisol wouldn't allow it so cornychat was born.

I'm also interested in the answer. I've had problems with Nests but not with Corny Chat.

There were features that weren't being implemented on Nests in a timely manner and there was community demand for a space built on Jam Systems that integrated NIP-07 nostr native logins and zaps.

Did you forget how open source works? /confused

Corny chat is so much better.

I operate Corny Chat.

Like Nostr Nests, its built atop Jam Systems as an Audio spaces like Club House or Twitter spaces. Unlike Nostr Nests, the code is open source, available to anyone to build on.

Having grown frustrated with the delays of the nostr nests rewrite plans last year, I offered bounties for both Jam and Jitsi to get a nostr enabled audio space started. Corny Chat was using that codebase when first setup in December 2023. Various microfeatures have been tested as I try to learn how React and Typescript and such works together.

Some key improvements so far

- Rooms can be customized with colir themes, graphics, emojis, links

- Users can login with NIP-07 extension with a signing to prove ownership, and pulls in profile data to set name and image

- Anon users get a randomly assigned corn theme avatar and name.

- Users can zap others that have lightning address setup from within the app.

- Users can do adhoc voting via thumbs up/down indicators, in addition to raised hand and other sticky labels.

And FWIW, I still have a bounty out for nostr nests and look forward to that coming along to help enrich the space. Coopetition is good.

Some of the changes i put in corny chat may not stick around, or be refined again as its determined what works and what doesnt. Lessons learned in this rapid emvironment can be applied to a more robust long term solution

All I need is a way to login on mobile without providing my nsec (amber?) and then I would pay for a premium account.

good on you and thanks for building in the open. competition is good.

Why do we need multiple implementations of Bitcoin? All we need is Core. And Linux, just Debian is fine. Just 1 nostr client too, we can all use Snort and just shut up and be happy with it.

That’s not how I intended that note. I was under the impression that nests was being developed as a native client (which is true) and had no idea where corny chat came from and was genuinely curious what’s going on. Vic and Derek explained and now I get it. No need to sub note me with sarcasm.

To be fair, I thought you already had me muted lol

My mute list was reset 😂

Sorry I can't keep up.
