You underestimate how much of American prosperity rested on its being seen as a destination for foreign talent.
Discussion
Also has a massive tourist industry.
Well, it had one.
We have had enough. We have been taken advantage of. These are simple boundaries. And like all boundaries people have a difficult time respecting them.
That's fine.
I don't think you were being taken advantage of by German housewives who shared a Free Palestine meme on Facebook, but you do you.
I believe you would be fine with Germany screening out people who openly call for jihad.
You would be wrong.
You are good with foreigners who openly call for jihad being allowed to enter Germany?
No, but I'm not interested in catching them by throwing such a wide net.
Cost and reward should be in some sort of balance.
I am also very aware that Muslims also shitpost. I'm not interested in putting someone in Social Media Jail, just for some Internet rant.
He who hath not ranted online can revoke the first visa.
Just look at the crap Trump himself spouts, all day, every day. Gonna annex Greenland. LOL whatever.
For Americans, the situation is so out of balance that the only way to restore order is to set firm boundaries equal to how ridiculous the outcomes have become.
That is an opinion.
Yes my opinion is that everyone wants to talk shit on America but also wants to be protected by her laws. Our values are always thrown in our face. Talking shit about America is a protected right for Americans to do, not everyone else.
Trump is an American protected by the Constitution. If some rando jihadi wants that same protection then they can create a constitution that protects it in their own country. We don't owe anybody anything.
The Constitution doesn't give anyone free speech and free speech isn't a right only Americans have, in America. People have free speech, by Nature, and the Constitution forbids the US federal government from infringing upon it.
The idea that only Americans should have their inalienable rights respected is highly un-American. That would turn them into priveleges granted by the government.
I never said give, I said protected. If everyone else wants their natural rights protected then they must create the circumstance where their governement isn't allowed to infringe on it.
We as Americans did that at great cost.
Nothing about 5 years of social media history is a "simple boundary." This is "papers please", it's fascist and UnAmerican.
As someone who works in the tourism industry I can vouch for the massive decline in visitors. FL doesn't have an income tax because we collect so much sales tax from tourism. FL will be ok due to running a great state budget. Other areas will see big drawdowns because Floridians also know how to compete to win tourists business.
Hotel owners will also bleed which is why I find this fascinating coming from a hotel owners
nice people with money will come because it doesn't impact them
I guess we're all bad people without money, then.
I have to prove I have enough money to drive to Alaska. Every country wants to know you can afford to go home. This is so basic. All it tells me is that everyone wants to come here but no one wants to have standards.
oh so "prove to THIS government that you're "nice" "? That's what American Freedom means?
I've put off two flights, so far. Everyone else I know has also decided to travel to someplace else.
It's not just the perceived personal risk; it's also the general impression that nobody wants us to come.
Iβm a regular visitor to Florida. Itβs one of the few destinations we can get a direct flight to and many Newfoundlanders escape there for the winters. I have seen a marked decline in desire to travel to the US - less as a complete boycott and more as an apathetic view.
Attitudes towards foreigners matter.
We have seen a big drawback from our friends up north. Between the exchange rate and fud from the Canadian government it's a tough sell
I'd say the policies of the current US administration might have a part to play in it, with continually increasing friction at the border, 51st state talk, and the tariffs. No FUD necessary.
I live a short drive from the border and would make a few trips per year usually. I've met a lot of good people in Montana & North Dakota. As it stands I haven't been to the US for over a year now, and don't care to go anytime soon. It's easier now to just stay here and spend my money locally, rather than in a foreign country.
I have several clients in Canada. One comes down regularly to bass fish in FL and we always have breakfast and compare notes of the state of affairs with our governments. I had no idea the Canadian government banned outside media from social platforms in 2023. My boss is Canadian and his parents have split opinions about everything based on his mom not using social media and his dad is consumed by it. Neither of our governments are making it easy to be good neighbors
Yes I mean if youβre tuning into CBC only and not checking any other sources, there is a clear slant. I donβt think completely unjustified, but amplified for sure. (I have really strong opinions about the CBC - and discuss its use cases frequentlyβ¦).
Neither government is making it easier - but it certainly is more difficult for Canadians at the border since trumpβs first administration. That coupled with the narrative does nothing for relations.
Iβll still be visiting my warm family, but with a little less enthusiasm - and a little more commentary on border controls.
Culture > geography alone.
Like when? The influx of mass immigration began with the Immigration Act of 1965. It's pretty clear by nearly all metrics the country has been getting exponentially worse since around that time.
The immigration people point to as having "built the country" is the Irish and Italian immigration during the industrial revolution. Not only are the immigration rates nothing compared to post '65 but Gaels and Mediterranean are racially similar to the largely Anglo stock of the colonists and early Americans.
There's a massive difference both in proportion and in quality of immigration that directly correlates to our rapid decline. You vastly overestimate the importance of bringing in millions of Mexicans and Indians.
