Please, this is really dumb. One thing that's nice about nostr is it's an escape from mainstream psyops like gender ideology. Let's not have it follow us here too.

It wouldn't be a problem except for the fact that Amethyst is such an incredible client with features I make regular usage of, so it's not really as simple as switching clients.
Come on people. People should be free do add whatever they want to their profile. Or are you against letting people free?
If it is dumb, no one will use it. Let's see how it goes.
I'm against supporting delusion. There was absolutely no reason to add it except to pander to said delusion because very few people on Nostr would ever make use of it.
I love your client and respect your work but it really was a completely unnecessary change and I hope you consider removing it.
It doesn't matter what you and I think. People should be free to do whatever they want in their profile.

Are they not already free to add or not add gender to their bio?
I think that is really the point people have been making.
Personally I don't actually care but I lean in the direction of it being unnecessary.
Implying that somehow this adds freedom to people on their profile is sketchy. They were already completely free to do so before.
Adding a new field for gender and thinking it adds anything when there is already a completely freeform bio field to use for all that?
Total honesty this just reeks of #wokeism and more dividing and categorizing.
🙄
It's really no bid deal. The profile on Nostr is already for them to add as many fields as they want. Many clients have this option to allow users to express themselves as fields. The one on amethyst is literally just 10 or so lines of code. It took me less than 5 mins to add. it's not really any burden.
To me it is way more important that users can express themselves in anyway they, and only they, see fit.
I'll be honest, I think your reasoning seems flimsy here in that you are just doing it because people might want it.
There was a fork of Amethyst called Garnet that added Monero tipping. I was curious how Nostr would handle something non-Bitcoin so I followed that for a bit.
It crashed and burned, that said, there was a user demand for that. Are you adding space for Monero addresses because people should be free to put what they want in their profile?
Cashu and lightning will have support for multiple coins soon via Taproot assets. If that happens, and gets enough usage, we will integrate them. It all depends how many users ask for.
The Garnet one was just poorly made. I don't really know if there is a market need for Monero because, quite literally, no one has ever asked me to do it. Monero was a fun experiment, but I don't think anyone really wants to link a privacy coin with a public identity. It doesn't make much sense.
To be clear, I'm not asking for it either, it just was an example of people wanting to do something with profiles that went against the grain of what a large chunk of nostr users wanted, but with a vocal group that did want it.
I will say I didn't expect that answer. I figured that was a line that wasn't going to be crossed. I take back what I said.
Yes, Garnet kind of lost momentum (maybe someone will fork it in the future). There is a small Garnet bounty to bring it up to date and fix some things, but check out mostard.org for an alternative web client
By the way, you can tip users notes without broadcasting to the Nostr network (and it was the default for Garnet). Similar to your "Non-Zap" feature on Amethyst
I remember there being a couple red flags with it, first it didnt keep up with the updates and then its creator wasnt on nostr, or wasn't able to be found. Its easy to find Vitor and whine about shit we have no ability to build ourselves haha.
Amethyst having multiple currencies was my example because it would cause a shit storm on here, but it sounds like Amethyst's philosophy really is the kitchen sink - if it exists and people want it, it will be added. Very interesting
what is the delusion?
People could already put stupid things in their profiles, and I'm not against them being free to do so. Why should this one in particular stupid thing be baked into the client?
The pronoun nonsense is an attempt to redefine words and corrupt language for ideological ends, so it's just sad to see Amethyst playing along.
Because despite what you believe, this "stupid thing" is not stupid or trivial to the people it matters to. And it has absolutely no impact on you so why are you so ruffled about it? Why is it so important to you to oppose such a non-issue?
Because gender ideology is an insidious poison and I care about it not being normalized. The people that care about it are not constrained by lack of a dedicated field.
it's me, a queer, and i'm here to poison you with my ideas.
write your own fucking client if it matters so much.
can you please add a nickname field. i want one where there are air quotes around my nickname, ty
We had username and display name, maybe we should add username back 🤔
We are also going to have nicknames that you can add to each of your follows. So, you can customize people's names at will.
So, freedom and accommodation for you, but ridicule and hate for those who are unlike you? How do you square that with the notion of freedom and individuality? And why does such a non-issue that doesn't affect you in the slightest bother you so much?
