i'm new here and learning the ropes.
what seems to be wrong with being "onboarded with primal"?
why do i get weird vibes from some users who think it's a gross or not the best gateway to nostr?

Depends, did it make you autofollow a bunch of people?
i don't recall. it may have but i don't auto-anything. i do remember that it suggested people to follow which i thought was helpful.
Glad to heard to didn’t force you to follow. Nostr should start with an empty feed be default; we are the curators of the curated, We are the music-makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams 🫂
It might be because of the kyc option to get started with wallet on primal.
But this onboards many new users which is great.
Different scenarios for different users cuz you gotta start somewhere
Then again I could be completely off the mark.
Primal sucks because it only shows you their friends. No regular pl3b tends to tr3nd on primal.
i'm looking at their trending 4h feed and there's a good mix of users. some are primal paid subscribers but not all.
-KYC wallet
-a trending algorithm that always pushes the same content from the same people.
-in the past they have censored users.
Also, there are clients some people find better. The Primal app has issues with notifications during hellthreads, and isn't the best for key security, requiring you to enter your private key, rather than using signing software that keeps your key more secure, and easier to use with other apps, enabling you to use the entire Nostr ecosystem.
If recommend checking out other options, just to see what is available. The best part of Nostr is choice. Your data here is yours, and follows you to any app you sign into.
thanks for that. all good info. i will be giving amethyst a try.
Check out Amber, that's the app for handling key security on Android. You save your nsec into Amber, then it will let you sign into other apps and Nostr web apps, keeping your key secure. I also would try Yakihonne, it has great support for long form articles. Voyage is good too, for a lighter text only client, with great discovery features.

I'm sorry are you saying primal isn't good or people say it's not a good app ?
Confused sorry 😐
i am asking why people say it isn't.
There’s nothing wrong with it, it’s just a matter of preference. Try out the other clients and see which one you prefer. I personally feel like primal is too polished. It feels fake. I like Damus.
Don’t use Primal, they don’t serve you by your relays, they use a cache system and can alter the order of timeline at will, shotgun KYC, and they don’t have ethics, in the past they censored users, and nothing grants that they will not do it again..
Primal has a lot of great upsides and a lot of downsides to go with them. Everything is tradeoffs.
I wrote a full review of Primal for Android on my site www.nostr-reviews.com that goes over many of these tradeoffs in detail.
There are two inexcusable problems I have with Primal that they have said they are working on fixing, and then I will be reconsidering the overall score I gave them:
1. They still only allow users to login by pasting their private key into the app. They need to add support for Android signers like Amber and remote signers like Amber or nsec.app.
2. They still only support a deprecated spec for DMs that leaks metadata about the sender and receiver. They need to upgrade to the latest DM spec for the sake of user privacy.
There are other issues, but those are the biggest ones for me.
thank you
