What does 'retirement' look like for you?

I hear it all the time. People want to save up X amount so they can retire. Apparently, it is this time and space we are all supposed to want to get to. But what does it mean? I hear things like I want to travel, I want to have free time to spend with family, I want to not have to work, I want to play golf, I want to buy some property. And what else? What next?

For me, if I am not working on building or contributing something towards a vision, I feel like I have no purpose. What is a hu-man with no purpose? Where are we truly headed, perhaps it is a mirage. I think what we really want is freedom to work on the things we want to work on. Don't we all want a reason to get up in the morning? Don't we always want to have a goal in mind to work towards?

What if you suddenly had financial freedom? How would you actually spend your days. Have you thought about what you would do in your 'retirement'? Obviously this is a very personal question. I want to hear what people are passionate about making happen in their future. And if we are making things happen, are we really re-tired or are we just finally free? Why would want anyone to be tired again? 😉

Retirement is the time to do whatever I want to do.

Why wouldn't we want that for our whole lives? Why would we wait?

Debt.

And why do we choose into debt?

Because I expect my savings to increase my purchasing power more than the interest.

What if you walked away from the debt? Do we need "good credit" where we are headed?

I think "retirement" is not a great word to use. I do the things that make me happy, and often it is very hard work on our homestead. To me, it is working on my own terms, resting when i want to rest, and doing things that will make my life better. It is happiness, because i am working for my own betterment, which i believe is the natural state of humans.

I love this viewpoint Maria!

Love it.

Life of doing what you want to pursue is a life you never retire from :)

This is my goal as well. I want my work to be my work.

Doing all the things I do on days that start with an S on all the days that end with a y.

Why wait? Why not have our 'jobs' be something we are passionate about? What do you like to do on the 'weekends'? Would that change if you didn't work a job?

I do like my job just don't want to do it all the time. Once I have earned enough money to fix the problems with my house I am cutting back to 3 days or so just enough to pay the bills I cant really escape so easily. Would have done it already but inflation has set that back a bit.

Thats cool that you will be able to cut back on work. If only we had a way to combat 'inflation' 👀

Yeah still working that one out 😂

The masses, especially in the UK and US pretty much work in order to buy/own shelter. That’s where it’s all gone wrong - the “dream of owning one’s home”.

That is a real problem. I am hopeful that we are in a for a big shift. Of course there will be much pain first.

It’s a disheartening fiat trap. I see the younger gen now taking out 40-year mortgages to try and realise this dream. I can almost guarantee that if you gave them some shelter and a bit of land they’d all become self-sufficient/work for themselves, effectively “retiring” from the fiat system of work.

That's basically what I did. I had the home with a decent mortage situation and I still had to get away. I realize this is a difficult thing to accomplsh for most now. I would love to see more people following their passions. Not sure how we get there though.

Yeah, I think it ended for many around 2004/5/6. If you hadn’t got on the “housing ladder” by then you were effectively screwed. Those keeping up with the fiat system are literally in the top 10% or so of workers/earners now. That’s a shed load of people who are not keeping up… And yep not really sure how this changes besides actual revolution. Like you, I’d love to see this change. I can only envisage smaller communities and perhaps only local government. Community farms supplying local areas, people getting involved and helping each other in their community. But I think human greed (and the want for power) is such a powerful force that this would probably get disrupted / corrupted over time too.

Plan is to put prices up until I get sacked everywhere 😂

I guess I'd open a school. I'd teach exactly wgst I think we need, and it would be a holy middle finger to all the stupid shit in schools and then in life. It would be a modern, tech and design oriented Pythagorean school, and graduates would be empowered anarchists.

Great idea. When people feel enough pain, they will be looking for schools like this I think. Keep the dream alive.

Retirement isn't not working it the freedom to choose where your energy goes. Retirement is the most purpose driven part of your life.

My career was one that gave me purpose. I felt valuable. It defined me and I was giving to my community. But the reality was that my energy was being drained in order to fulfil that purpose. Now I get to direct my energy where and when I choose.

I think that people who want to retire so they can play golf or whatever will inevitably be hit with some sort of existential crisis and go about seeking something to connect with their purpose.

Recently retired and I've never worked harder. 😎

I believe in world running on the bitcoin standard, we will all get to that purpose driven life sooner. Let the robots do the monotonous tasks. We don't need "more jobs". We need sound money, and free flowing information. The rest will fall into place.

Totally agree.

We were sold the Canadian vision. Be canadian, serve your country, be a good slave. You will retire with dignity.

I dont ever expect that canada will pay this debt owed. This promise. Broken.

So it is with this understanding that i prudently live my life.

No expectations of a pay check after my working years expired.

Do the prudent thing!

Pretty much sounds like america.

I don’t like the work REtirement meaning -to tire in life again- I would refer to DIStire meaning -to remove tire from life-

I want my DISTIREMENT to have such a huge amount of creative growth that I have boundless mental and emotional stability. Stability in my work, stability in my family, stability in my assets, my future, my last days will be built on a stable foundation.

I like that.

all these people have issues with the word retirement. lol i don't give a shit what you call it. i can't wait!

gunna hang out way more in India and Nepal and spend time in meditation retreat away from everything and everyone

and its not like its some far off abstract thing either. i have less btc today because bought an acre of land instead. gotta worktowards the things that make us happy today
