Let’s, for the sake of argument, say that I did want to jettison thousands of dollars of Apple hardware into an active volcano.

What are equivalent laptops and phones (I’ve seen no watches remotely close, but bonus if you know one) as measured by:

1. Build quality

2. Performance (component integration, speed, battery life, etc.)

3. Warranty and support (a la AppleCare)

4. Just Works™️ OS and applications

Before answering, kindly only chime in if:

1. You own the product(s) in question

2. You hearby acknowledge that, while I’m highly technical, I long ago lost interest in compiling my own kernel or wrestling with bootloaders. I’m a “business user,” not a developer. That’s my use case.

Please and thank you. 🙏🏼 #asknostr

Such a combination does not exist imo

This is my assumption. I’d love to be proven wrong.

Yeah no way to replace the Apple ecosystem yet

Same can be told about #bitcoin. Only developers understand.

This makes no sense and contributes nothing. 🤫

Just your opinion then.

About #Apple. Never had one and don't miss it. There are so many alternatives. Just brainwashed design.

Sounds like we're mixing business and pleasure

💼 🕺🏼

I've tried them all. Apple just works. As a business user, I tried going the grapheneos route on pixel pro7 but it's too frustrating and time consuming.

I do not own any of these products in question, but I have had experience with them, and they fit the criteria of 2 - and while I don’t think there’s anything that’s a *perfect* solution, this privacy focused alternative isn’t as bad as some out there that i’ve seen.

Thanks. I’ll have a look. I’m familiar with the brand.

Yw! Thought it might be worth a deeper dive 🤙

If youre okay running Linux I love System76's computers. Probably going to have a better time without dealing with GPU stuff. I think their Oryx Pro would qualify as an ultrabpok.

I'm seriously considering one of their desktops.

Ultrabook* 😂

Thanks. I’ve eyed their laptops for a while, and Pop!OS is impressive; ran it on an old Dell a while back.

I’ve heard not great things about battery life from nostr:npub1qny3tkh0acurzla8x3zy4nhrjz5zd8l9sy9jys09umwng00manysew95gx and others.

Yeah, the battery life and fan curves probably my biggest gripes, but thats why I would recommend their portable models with integrated graphics.

My Gazelle frequently sounds like a wind tunnel especially when plugged in, so looking back I probably should have went with their more portable models and saved some money on a desktop for more compute power.

The last 3 years I've done some distro hopping trying to get away from Windows on my home computer.

I tried Pop_OS!, Kubuntu, EndeavourOS, Debian, and MX Linux all with KDE desktop.

I think MX Linux is definitely a sweat spot of stability, usability, and great new hardware compatibility. It's as fast as an Arch based, as stable as a Debian based, and compatible as a Ubuntu. NOTE: Couldn't use Ventoy to install.

Phone wise, Apple makes a rock solid product.

I’m unfamiliar with MX Linux. Thanks. Any particular hardware it’s strong with?

Idgaf because I'm not funding a tech cult.

Enjoy my mute list. 😀

glad to be a part of those who upset an apple cultist.

there is plenty of good hardware, for the rest who are watching. Go check out what ASUS does these days with OLED screen laptops. Trusting a brand is stupid. Though I have a small affection for ASUS because they started out as Amiga hardware developers, the name comes from Pegasus. Taiwanese also.

Apple has shat on its users 7 ways to sunday and we still have people like Shawn here, who are in love despite apple repeatedly fucking with LN and Bitcoin apps.

Have you considered running something like Pi-Hole, and using it as the primary DNS for all of your devices?

This would allow you to do DNS level filtering. ie blacklist the mothership, and stop your devices from 'phoning home' ...

This isn’t what I’m up against, but thanks. It’s a great project. Without a lot of backend services, Apple devices are largely expensive bricks.

Unfortunately I'm in exactly the same boat as you and I have no good answers.
