Can anyone smarter than me confirm if this is true? TLDR is that effective ring size on Monero transactions can drop to 4.2 with this attack method. All is not lost though, full chain membership proofs are coming eventually which would negate this kind of attack entirely. FCMP increases the ring size to include every transaction ever made as decoys which would exponentially increase Monero's privacy.

It's a well known issue, yes. That's also why FCMP++ is such a big deal despite increasin trabdaction size.

The papers results are theoretical to some degree and based on certain assumptions. I think up until now people thought (or hoped) that the statistical reduction would only be in the ball park of 6-8.

I would read it and give you th information. But I don't know how to read.

Yes, it's true with this attack.

Remember though that is per transaction. Every additional hop away grows your anon set exponentially

Example for after 3 churns: 4.2^3= ~74 potential decoys that could be you even under this kind of attack.

Wouldn't hurt to churn a few times at random before actually spending if you're under a higher than average threat model

isnt that 4.2 number back from when the ring size was 11?

I think with the current size its more like 5.1

and worth noting that its just a statistical indicator

not deterministic establishment

apparently I'm wrong about that

but not quite sure *why

since that's the figure in Ruckniums test

Yea I have no clue which one it is tbh
