In some ways, yes. Privacy works by hiding in the crowd. The larger the crowd the better
I donβt think it has to be true. You still have significantly more freedom with many small custodial solutions. And apps like nsec.app make holding keys easy.

I wonder if there exists some solution based on biometric key derivation which would turn the "hodl your own keys" requirement into a "be your own keys" situation.
Yup. We can't get them to hold their own passwords though and plenty argue users handling their own passwords is often less secure than a custodial password solution. At least you can often change a password. IDK the answer for normies yet, for now I think self-hosted is the answer which is why Im slowly working on noscrypt and NVault.
