Today, one day after Mark Carney wins the Canadian election, Danielle Smith (premier of Alberta) made it easier for people in Alberta to have a referendum on separating from the rest of Canada.

Only 208 000 signatures are needed to let the horse out of the barn.

This is not some backwoods, lunatic movement like it has been painted out to be by the powers that be. This is regular people who are fed up.

I wonder how that would work in terms of citizenship if successful. Will people from BC be able to become citizens?

I’m not too sure on how the particulars would work. I’m thinking maybe a sovereign nation with a free association with the US. Or a US state, which would be pretty good, as Alberta would have two senators which would hold a lot of power in a senate that is always gridlocked. Swing votes would provide leverage.
