Today, one day after Mark Carney wins the Canadian election, Danielle Smith (premier of Alberta) made it easier for people in Alberta to have a referendum on separating from the rest of Canada.

Only 208 000 signatures are needed to let the horse out of the barn.

This is not some backwoods, lunatic movement like it has been painted out to be by the powers that be. This is regular people who are fed up.

Letโ€™s see what happens ๐Ÿฟ

I wonder how that would work in terms of citizenship if successful. Will people from BC be able to become citizens?

Iโ€™m not too sure on how the particulars would work. Iโ€™m thinking maybe a sovereign nation with a free association with the US. Or a US state, which would be pretty good, as Alberta would have two senators which would hold a lot of power in a senate that is always gridlocked. Swing votes would provide leverage.

Wild times. I'm curious (just like everyone) where this goes. Isn't that a huge portion of the lumber, ag, and oil?

Alberta has 95% of Canadaโ€™s oil and gas reserves. A lot of cheap and expansive land up north, with access to cheap energy (think AI and data centers), rich farmland, ton of agriculture, and extremely industrious people, who donโ€™t mind taking risks and getting their hands dirty.

Oh and itโ€™s coldโ€ฆ.cheap energy and cold temperatures. Good for mining btc.

Yikes! 95% is a lot more than I realized! I wonder how much of a population boom they're going to see in the next couple of months. ๐Ÿ˜…

Itโ€™s been a steady stream for years. Maybe there will be an uptick, but most Canadians (the ones whoโ€™ve only come here for the Stampede and a trip into the mountains) look down upon Albertans and Alberta. Which is fine by me.

You don't know what you've got until it's gone ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿซ‚ ...please keep us posted.

I think this is Alberta's best chance.
