Any 9mm pistol aficionados here?

I'm trying to narrow down my options for a home defense pistol.

* CZ P10 F (optics ready) is my top candidate

* S&W M&P M2.0 full size (optics ready) in the mix

* Walther PDP fading but still on the list

I haven't shot any of them yet, so it's all subject to change.

Anyone have any experience with any of the above?

Why no Glock? The chunky grip is a non-starter for me; just always feels a bit too big for me to secure a solid grip on. I'm not a super-experienced shooter so I need to feel confident that I can control it.

I'm prioritizing grip fit / ergonomics and recoil / muzzle flip control (thus the CZ and not so much the PDP, or so I'm told).

Why full size? I'm not in a carry state. Main use case is home defense and just overall pistol training / skill building.

Magnum?! :-)

I love no gun I own better than my Beretta 92FS Parabellum.

The PX4 Storm full size (and compact) have really good grips as well. I am a Beretta fan if you can’t tell.

Check out Canik. They are great quality firearms at a reasonable price. I have a METE SFX (full size) and MC9 (CCW)

Canik’s trigger is one of the best stock triggers out there.

Of your options, I’ve only shot the M&P, not a fan. It doesn’t fit my hand well and trigger is sloppy.

Best advice is to try to shoot it before you buy if possible. 2nd buy something and find people to shoot with, you’ll figure out what you like the more you shoot.

Cheers 🤙🏽

Why pistol for home defense? Hard to hit anything. Shotgun better IMO.

I'm not comfortable yet with shotguns. Every time I've pulled the trigger I've flinched. For me as a novice shooter, comfort and confidence are by far the most important aspects. If shit hits the fan, I can't be afraid of my weapon and the intruder.

Also I already have a modest rifle (my training wheels gun: 9mm PC Carbine) and part of my thinking for the pistol is to have it secured in a small, secure space in a different part of the house in case the rifle is out of reach. Much easier to set up a small gun safe than have two different long gun-sized secure storage locations.

Also my house is really small* so everything would pretty much be close range. My mental model is to just stay defensively crouched and hold off intruders until the police arrive. Basically just have to defend one doorway.

*(but having a basement creates that "I'm far from my rifle" problem)

That's fair. You can solve the unfamiliarity problem with practice.

You're a DIYer...

Ha, well, a DIYer with no 3d printer. I barely trust myself with the most reliable guns ever produced by mankind... no way I'd trust a 3d printed one yet.

Love my Sig p226. Too big to carry around out of home though.

To me the S&P looks the coolest so I'd go with that. 😎

S&W M&P*

For pure looks, I kind of like the Walther PDP's blockiness-as-aesthetic severity.

The M&P looks most like my mental image of a handgun.

The photos don't do the CZ justice. It's lower-profile slide and the diagonal bevel cuts are understated but way sexy.

Regardless, obv performance will be the deciding factor.

If your main use case is home defense then you should get a shotgun.

A full size 9mm is the right way to learn

learn. Don't over think it, start training today. It super easy to sell a used handgun if you don't like it, around here anyway.

Of that list, the CZ.

The M&P is a stupidly reliable piece, but the CZ trigger is "better."

But anyone who complains about triggers is not really someone I'd listen to about defensive weapon use. You will not notice the trigger in defensive use unless you train under EXTREME stress conditions VERY regularly.

But...

Get a shotgun. Train with it. There is no finer close quarters weapon if you do your part.

Thanks for the feedback!

I'm very late to the shooting world and slowly building my skills and confidence. Not there yet with shotguns. Only recently decided I was ready to progress from my 9mm PC Carbine to a handgun.

P10s are fine and cheap. M&Ps are stupid reliable. The PDP has the best trigger and ergos of the bunch.

If it was me, I'd get the M&P. I carry a Shield and I trust that gun to go bang everytime. CZs have a shorter throat and can be somewhat ammo sensitive although likely not an issue if you're shooting factory loads.

I'm eager to get my hands on all three at the range (though most ranges only rent out the compact variants) in the next couple of days.

Some people said that PDP has the sharpest recoil of the bunch while the CZ was the flattest. Your thoughts? And if there are differences, are they big enough to even matter?

Nah. You're talking 9mm in full size handguns. It's a baby round. Proper grip technique will make any differences negligible.

If you're open to revolvers, consider the Chiappa Rhino for great ergonomics plus reliability against cycle/feed/ammo failures. Just keep pulling the trigger. And you can do it all day long with .357 as easily as .38 due to the low bore axis. The reduction in felt recoil is real

Ha, the friend who taught me to shoot just sent me info about these! But more as a curiosity, on his bucket list to shoot some day.

Price is more than I'm looking to spend and I'd rather stay solidly mainstream for my first pistol.

I own the M&P 2.0 FDE and it is a fantastic handgun. Even relatively inexperienced shooters are accurate w/ it without a ton of practice.

I'm looking forward to giving it a try. My local gun ranges tend to only rent out the compact versions, but the M&P 2.0 is one of the few full size ones available.

Any feedback on the M&P from shooters with smaller hands?

The last Glock I shot (gen3 19) was just way too rectangular and bulky in the hand. I haven't seen if the gen 4 / gen 5 fit is better.

Oh hell, now I understand why the ranges near me only have the compact versions available: my local gun laws limit pistol magazine capacity to 15 rounds.

So the only version of these that I'd be able to legally purchase is the compact.

Ug.

From what I've heard it's pretty easy to get an unlicensed one around your parts.

All of your reasoning is good. Pick the one that feels the best in your hand and the rest will take care of itself.

Big fan of Sig Sauer in general.

I think my local range has a p320 for me to try out.

In general the .40 caliber Sigs I have shot are well balanced and minimize kickback. I have a P226 and a P239 and love them both.

Do make the same mistake I did. Buy a compact 9mm or consider a .380

My 9mm is huge which makes it cumbersome to conceal it. I love mine tho!

The beauty of the sig p320 is that the trigger group is what is serialized, you can drop it in different frames. My buddy is a big p320 fan. If you haven't looked into that. On that note, lots of competition shooters really like the CZ.

Why 9mm? For home defense my choice would be a SW Governor loaded with 000 .410 buckshot. Maybe the last cylinder with a hollow point for the final coup de grace.
