It's not about the watch, it's about how much the watch costs.
It's a status symbol, like the Escalade or Porsche parked out front.
At least that has been my experience with watch guys that I know.

Most guys aren't watch guys! I think it's way more useful/noticable as a style accessory than status
There have generally been nice surfing/diving watches that are ~$100. Haven't worn one in like 10+ years tho, so maybe prices have gone up
I use a shitty plastic Casio when I surf. Not gonna dive with it but it’s been great for like $15. You could probably get a nice gshock or similar for <$100 that’ll go deeper than you can. Maybe even some steel seikos for not much more
Actually I got a super cheap digital watch specifically for diving & it works great 😅
It blows my mind you can even get tourbillon from China now lol

All my watches are under $500. Some of my favorites are the cheap $30-$50 Casio watches. I have one Hamilton Auto for those nights I want to dress up a little for a dinner date. For me, I would never buy a Rolex or Omega. Would rather slam that value into Bitcoin.

Seiko is great brand. They’ve got great affordable watches at 200-500USD range. At 1kUSd you get absolutely fantastic in terms of quality, finishing, and design and moreover all of them host their in-house movements. And when you want to buy something exclusive just go for Grand Seiko. I do not find Swiss Brands (which are great anyway) anywhere nearby Seiko when it comes to price/value comparison.
