You can be an active Nostr user and completely ignore the social media use case and/or the follow stuff. None of our apps do anything with follows, but they still work fine.
And he can't actually see a lot of relay traffic, as it's private or AUTH.
nostr will always be a black box for surveillance. Amen!
Yeah! It’s not 100% accurate, but how many have so many followers and 0 followings? Maybe 10? If you don’t follow, zap, or post, then it’s not counted.
I consider REQing to relays to be active usage. Reading is activity.

How is being active measured? A daily interaction or just going into the clients app to see what’s up?
