It turns out that DuckDuckGo is essentially a Bing frontend. Not only that, but there was also an instance where they hid Microsoft trackers in their browser. 💀

Startpage, on the other hand, is literally pulling all its search results from Google, and it's owned by an advertising company. 💀

Neither of them has its own index.

You know who does? Brave Search, or at least they're actively building one. I believe this is the solution we need: new search indexes instead of relying on Big Tech.

So, Brave Search is now the new web search engine on NostrNet.work , it's good enough for most of the people imo.

I didn't know that about DuckDuckGo. I'm happy I never used it then I would have to tell people I've used Bing 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I would rather use Google than use Bing. Bing is worst 😂

Yeah, that’s a TIL for me, too. 😬

#Brave search is quite disappointing actually. The results aren’t much different that the ones returned by #Google or #Bing and there are rarely more than 2 pages of results shown… Try http://metager.org/ instead. #SearchEngine #Tech

I tested metager, it gets most of the result from Yahoo. They're also not building their own index. Brave search isn't great but they are definitely headed to a right direction.

Interesting, I’ve been using Brave for quite some time but I had to give up on it because the results seem quite biased (like on Google and Bing). From my experience, it’s good for a quick « how to » search but not to research topics in depth. I know Metager is an aggregator but somehow I’ve found the results to be more diverse. Obviously I like the idea of Brave building their own index but so far it hasn’t been translated in actual benefits. What do you think of presearch? I’ve been using it for some time but stop using it because I’ve read their privacy wasn’t great (although I. Haven’t looked into the specifics).

Thanks for this

What do you think is the solution friend? The truth is that there is no bulletproof seeker today 🤔

Are we all just supposed to ignore that brave is a shitcoin project?

Yeah that's a big L, but there search engine is very clean.

🤦‍♂️

'Brave's CEO has apologized and promised it will never happen again.'

That is exactly what scammers say when they are caught in the act.

#Brave

#Nostrnet.work

I always knew there was something fishy about DDG

Ducky

They have some kind of pedo/4chan origin too

They should drop BAT for sats

Or have an option SATS or BAT :)

BAT is how they get the VC funding

What about yacy?

https://yacy.net/

#YaCy is a good idea, but its results are poor. I hosted a couple of peers to try to get better info in its index, but after a year or two of crawling and indexing sites relevant to my topic, real results were generally buried under pages of garbage results.

Thank you for this. Have been a long time user of dickduckgo but not anymore

Searx can be a temporary solution, the ultimate that I know of is Yacy.

Not the best take.

So "unproven shitcoiner search engine" > privacy preserving bing frontend?? Lol

Is brave engine ok because they are larping about about being a small indie company fighting Big Tech, when they are just as bad ad the rest and their business model is pumping and dumping their shitcoin?

Use what works well and protects your privacy.

💀💀💀

Never trusted the DuckDuckGo thing, specially since the Russia-Ukraine war…

Brave search also censors stuff tho.

What is your recommended browser?

What do you think about SearX?

🤯

I noticed this a while ago when a website of mine won't show up on only those 2 search engines. Wild how easily people trust DDG

I lost confidence in them when they started "filtering out misinformation"

Thank you @iefan for your contribution to Freedom Tech! 🕊️

Your dedication is priceless! 🌻

I am grateful for you all that are participating in making our world a better place❣️

I love brave! I use it daily most days!

you are right, Brave has his own index, yes, but still uses google for some cases.

I do not blame them, it is hard to be good enough to be independent.

But isn't Brave an advertising company?

Instead of bing, you can use ecosia (=results from bing) and do a little bit for the enviroment

been using it for years. Thanks for confirming im not crazy!

What’s the source for DuckDuckGo?

If you believe them, DDG claim to source results from their own index, plus topic-specific sites and #Bing so apparently it's not just a front-end for Bing.

P.S. I like #Stract engine, #opensource and independent index:

(in development)

Brave has privacy issues, but at least they are not as bad as opera.
