Just looking through my old posts... I got an umbrel a while back, and set it up with Bitcoin Node (core). There were some recommendations posted to me for Start9. That's a bit of a regret, as Umbrel seems to be gently in bed with core. Regardless, my umbrel runs bitcoin knots, just on the principle of the thing. I don't like the way core is censoring people, and I'd rather have less spam if possible. Here's the thing about nostr. I started many moons ago. I posted a few posts. I mostly stopped posting. During the elections last year, I started an X account. Algos got me addicted, and I scrolled and scrolled when I had some bored free time. Got to be too much so I blocked it with my porn blocker. No more X.
Nostr - user engagement is relatively low because no algos. Good. The thing is, I basically don't post, because it takes energy and I want less social interaction in my life, not more. I just want to read something interesting sometimes. Nostr is nice. It's the way social media should be - there when you want it, but it doesn't demand and devour your time.
I don't use X anymore. I use Nostr once every few days to see if anyone is saying anything interesting. Otherwise, I don't think much about it. THAT IS GOOD. Most of my energy is spent working with my hands to make beautiful things, and working with people I care about, teaching ancient music. I don't need a time suck. Social media should be a once in a while thing. Nostr is good. It's like smoking a pipe instead of Marlboros. Just aromatic tobacco, there when you want it, to relax. No addictive chemicals added to make it burn faster and make you desire more. Just the stuff that God made. Puff, puff. Nostr.

It was a random thursday, the summer between junior and senior year of high school.
Me and three of my buddies were getting high in the back of my friend Daveās mustang, when someone decided we needed to go on a beer run.
For anyone who isnāt aware, a beer run is very literally what it sounds like. You grab a case of beer and run š out of the store before anyone catches you.
Conversation then turned to who was going to do the beer run. (You only need one guy) My friend Dave was driving so he was out. I had turned 18 recently and I didnāt want to risk big boy jail. Which left my friend James and my friend Brad. James didnāt want to do it because he was wearing flip flops. Brad made up some bs about how he twisted his ankle skateboarding (which was a lie). So ultimately James was like āfine Iāll do it you fucking pussiesā and he got out of the car.
So we watch James walk into the grocery store from the car, the plan is to pick him up around back when he runs out.
Hereās where things get crazy. The grocery store is next to a target and as James walk into the store a police helicopter pulls into the sky above the parking lot weāre in.
āFuck, this is bad. Ok quick call James š± let him know that the beer run is off.ā
I dial up James on my phone and as itās ringing I see him bolt out of the store, two angry grocery clerks chase after him. Heās running so fast that his flip flops come flying off behind him and heās now running barefoot on 130 degree asphalt.
He turns the corner and the police helicopter sees him, and starts yelling at him through the bullhorn to get on the ground. He throws the beer in the air and puts his hands up. 70 cans of beer going rolling down the hill.
Weāre in the back of the mustang stoned. Watching all this play out, freaking the fuck out.
We decide we better split, so we quietly drive off and go to my friends house.
A few hours later we get a call from James, the cops are letting him go with a ticket and a court appearance and we can come pick him up from the target.
We go to pick him up and we learn that there had been an armed robbery at the target at the exact time we were pulling off a beer run next door. Two masked men with guns were robbing the registers. They were both being apprehended precisely at the moment we were pulling off a stupid beer run. Talk about bad luck lol
The cops saw him running and assumed he was part of it. They put him on the ground and had the K-9 unit guard him.
After the dust cleared and they realized he was just a dumb kid on a beer run they decided to cut him loose. They had bigger fish to fry that day.
My friend Dave and I still get together and tell this story at least once a year and always compare notes to make sure we remember it correctly.
We joke about how everyone thinks weāre embellishing or outright lying when we tell them about the helicopter interrupting our beer run.
Iāve been telling this story so long it almost doesnāt seem real to me either.
But it definitely happened and was one of the craziest things Iād ever seen in my life lol š

Agreed, and most likely the average user will opt for a custodial solution over something like breez. I've read about the possibility of using Litecoin and atomic swaps as a virtually feeless way to onboard onto lightning, which could help someday... Personally, I'm willing to do the work and put up the capital to use it, but to get mass adoption I'm sure that things will need to be easier.
That said. In 1995 Linux on the desktop seemed like a pipe dream. Now everyone uses Linux, on their smartphones. Sure, it's Google... But if that can happen, then lightning can happen for the average dummy too.

Iām personally not a Breez user, I never had a great experience with it.
Breez seems promising for a plug and play, ordinary person's lightning wallet, but it's still in beta so I haven't used it much. Everyone seems to like Phoenix, so I thought of giving that a go... Still, I want to be able to suggest something to people who aren't interested in learning about funding channels and such. Breez is the only promising self custodial solution that I've found so far...
