You can import your own Nostr key into Alby if you want that.
The automatic generation of your key is only one option. You can use a 12 words seed phrase as a backup for your Nostr key then.

Great. Putting your Nostr private key in the extension is the necessary first step. Can go to a Nostr web app like Iris, Primal, Snort or Coracle and log in using the browser extension? You will usually see a button or Alby will pop up automatically.

The master key in Alby does not automatically overwrite and existing Nostr private key in the extension. You can always store your Nostr private key independent from the master key.
