Qubes OS

How does Qubes become the most secure operating system today?

By isolation. Qubes is not an ordinary Linux distribution, Qubes is a Xen distribution. Xen is an open source tier 1 (baremetal) hypervisor that runs directly against the hardware. Virtual machines run on top of Xen, each of these virtual machines is the one that provides services to the system. For example, there is a virtual machine that provides access to the network, another virtual machine provides the firewall, another virtual machine dom0 is the one that manages the Xen engine, another virtual machine manages the USB devices, and finally we have the different work environments, with which we can create various levels of reliability.

All this that you are telling me is all Greek to me. In short, if a virtual machine is compromised, it will not affect the rest of the machines, because each machine is isolated from the rest of the system.

Within Qubes, we can run different Linux templates, including Fedora and Debian, and we can also run Windows (I do not recommend it, because it is a severely compromised system).

What are these working environments?

The funny thing about all this, is that we have to re-educate ourselves to use Qubes. The idea is based on having several environments depending on the reliability of each one. For example, we will use the "untrusted" environment for everyday web browsing, we can use the personal environment for accessing password-required websites, and we can use the "work" environment or one created on purpose for the most critical websites such as bank websites. Finally we have an environment called "vault" which does not have Internet access, and in which we should store our files. The working environments are differentiated from each other by the color of their windows, which is customizable. For example, in the default installation the "untrusted" environment has a red window border, the "personal" one is yellow, "work" is blue, and finally the "vault" environment is black.

What does this achieve? That for example, if the "untrusted" environment is compromised, it will not affect the "personal" environment in which we have access to webs with passwords and therefore the access cookies. Or in the same way, if the "untrusted" environment or any other is compromised, it will never have access to our "vault" environment which is where we have the files.

We can create as many environments as we want in just seconds, since these are based on Templates predefined by the system.

How does Qubes achieve privacy?

Through Whonix and the Tor network. Whonix is a Linux distribution configured to use Tor by default, like Tails. Qubes uses a Whonix Template to give access to the Tor network. In case we want privacy, we just have to make use of the whonix machines that Qubes creates by default. We can even configure it so that all Qubes access is through Tor.

What do I need to use Qubes?

A processor and a motherboard that are compatible with Intel's vt-x and vt-d instructions or their AMD equivalents, AMD-V and AMD-Vi.

It's a bit of a pain, because not all computers, especially low-end ones, are compatible, but it's the price to pay for running a "reasonably secure" operating system.

How do you install it?

Well, like any other Linux distribution, it has its graphical wizard and it is not very difficult, but if you have any questions or problems, I will gladly help you.

Does it run in Apple hardware, like. MacBook Pro?

I rarely lose my temper, but whenever I do a couple times per year, my writing gets 10x as much reach and likes and shares, and gets basically immortalized. But I'm rarely happy about it when it does.

I still think about this a lot in terms of how I choose to use social media- with reach comes responsibility.

It's both a bad thing and a good thing. On one hand, it's not great that posts based on a combination of emotion and reason get *way* better reach than ones based on more pure reason alone. For "clicks" the best thing I could do for a given post is lose my temper and go all-out on something.

On the other hand, the rare cases where I lose my temper are based on serious built-up frustrations over months. I'm frustrated about something, keep holding it back, and then something becomes intolerable. My socially-compliant self-censorship all unravels at once, not perfectly, but with a clear aspect of *deep* honesty. And people see that honesty because it reflects their own. So it spreads.

So, most of the time, I write carefully, and I know my audience comes from multiple different backgrounds, literally from Indonesian farmers to Wall Street institutional billionaires, and I try to politely move the Overton window from within the Overton window. But a couple times per year, I lose my temper and post my emotional thoughts, which in some ways are more honest, but are also not exactly my ideal self-actualized self.

I end up being grateful for both my constant attempt at control and my rare tempers, because somewhere in the middle is my truth. That blend between controlled reason and built-up emotion is really hard to manage in an era of digital media and semi-immortalized content.

Anyway, I'll post this random stuff on Nostr, not Twitter. You guys and girls get the real thoughts because you're here.

Perhaps #Nostr is that training ground where your truth, that middle ground, gets expressed directly. But I appreciate you no matter from which ground you express because your sincerity imbues all of them. For me, you are such a genuine person, and because I so appreciate contact with genuineness, that I listen to most of your podcasts even when Iโ€™m not interested in hearing more about macro. Contact with genuine energy is so nourishing and whatโ€™s also so lacking in the modern world. I believe small communities in less โ€œdevelopedโ€ locations in the world continue to have such intimate exchange. And your centeredness is so grounding, Lyn. I feel the force within. And youโ€™re so young!! How exciting!! ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ™๐Ÿค

Perhaps it's just me, but Primal on iOS doesn't allow me to post and couldn't connect to Alby Wallet because Alby would only try to open up Damus and not Primal... I deleted Damus to try, but still didn't work. Got an error instead.

Which Lightning wallet has the lowest on-chain transaction fee now (transaction fee + service fee)? Is there one where the user can choose the fee level?

Hi Joe! Nice seeing you here!

I feel that Nostr becomes more meaningful and fun when you actually take time to engage with it, without the need to make something happen, like making something go viral. With the Global Feed, notes actually reach normies, but may not reach the โ€œelitesโ€.

Hmmโ€ฆ interestingโ€ฆ indeed, ordered thoughts, or epiphanies and realizations, come from a distillation process of inner chaos, so do we have the ability to transmute high entropy to low entropy, which then gets shared and expressed as high entropy again?

I also wondered at what we may be missing in the picture that describes the universe as going in a one-way direction from low to high entropy. Perhaps low entropy is a highly ordered level of consciousness? ๐Ÿค”

I don't know about the Big Bang and the low entropy of Past Hypothesis, or how black holes may emit radiation or not because I can't integrate a linear time hypothesis of the universe with the also current understanding that there is no linear time, but only the illusion or experience of linear time, no matter how compelling that experience may be. But the talk of low entropy and high entropy and someone's question about everyday life made me think of how thoughts are also expressions of either low or high entropy. Thoughts aligned to truth and one's center, which itself is aligned to a greater center (experienced as alignment with gravity in our physical dimension, or alignment with a higher truth), feel very organized and of low entropy, while thoughts arising from a space of disconnect feel frazzled and of high entropy.

Great food for thought. More questions than answers.

Thank you for sharing!

There's no other option than being on the right path when you're truthful to yourself. So precious during these times of monumental change in the history of humanity. Even if you may feel vulnerable, you are such an important part of the many that are coming together in good faith, in love, in openness, to keep the energy vibrating high so the light can serve as a beacon for those who are moved by it and for those who are looking for a hand in the dark. I'm so honored to be there alongside you. ๐Ÿค๐Ÿซ‚๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ

Don't know who your Bluesky friends who invited you over are, but welcome to #Nostr! There are many new friends here.

Iefen, I didn't know who you were, but somehow, your note sharing your inner angst a few months ago really touched me because of the sincerity and the genuineness I felt behind the words. The vulnerability and honesty that you expressed in Nostr public through that note opened the space for deep sharing and heart intimacy in a way that I have almost never seen shared, and I most appreciate that about you. I still don't know what you really do or your significant contributions to the Nostr and Bitcoin space, but somehow, I don't need to know. It just always brings a smile to my face and a warmth to my heart when I see your posts. ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ
