This is the last time I will comment on 2023 election polls. They don't matter nearly as much as the news media seem to think. What matters is policy.

Poll focused coverage turns elections into a horse race between 2 "blocks", as if we're still running elections under FPP. We're not. Thanks to MMP, our elections are no longer a mostly pointless choice between Tweedledee and Tweedledum. They're a choice among many competing visions for the country's future, and policies to support them.

Cause significantly less harm when selling cannabis than alcohol. Irish Labour recognise this indisputable fact, and wisely propose regulating and taxing the businesses that produce and sell cannabis, like we do with the businesses that produce and sell alcohol. See:

My approach to programming is best summed up by a quote from Mr Miyagi;

This is is how far to right the Overton Window has been dragged since the Reagan/ Thatcher era.

"I don't know if anyone is on X [Titter] anymore..."

This comment from a working journalist speaks volumes. Only a year ago, it was unthinkable for any media professional *not* to be on Titter.

True. Which is why I specified...

> Given all the space opening up in the front bench

Labour went into this term with a strong front bench. Plus a huge caucus competing for the minimal attention the news media's race horse coverage of politics gives to backbenchers.

Now...

Are you talking about RNZ podcasts like Undercurrent? They do have RSS feeds, eg:

I listen via AntennaPod.

I would characterize a lot of this as being about adopting the superficial mannerisms of radicalism (wearing the T-shirt, etc), while actually being orthodox capitalists.

But Robert Reich reminds us that the Democrats' commitment even to its own internal democracy has hardly been unwavering;

Final thought; the biggest enemy of US democracy is the Two Party System. Without an easy way for new parties to enter mainstream politics, and corrupted parties to be sidelined by the electorate in their favour, all anti-democratic forces need to do is enter one of the Two Parties in sufficient numbers to corrupt it.

Most people only seem to have noticed this strategy at with the election of Agent Orange. But some noticed it beginning with the Tea Party:

Sure, but you only need to hide your identity once to get the image onto the chain that could be there forever. Available to any other pervert who wants to see it, who always have plausible deniability, because they can claim they were checking a transaction.

It's a huge hole that BlockChain communities are going to need to plug, if they don't want to be constantly reacting to it after the fact.

> Blockchain forks are a thing. And network participants voting on those forks is also a thing. These images could be removed from the main fork

True, but organising such votes appears to be a huge logistical effort. Worse, every time it's happened, it's damaged confidence in both the techn and the governance around it.

Loss of confidence is bad for any decentralised network tech. It's also bad for any financial institution. It's particularly bad for projects that are both.

Got good news and bad news nostr:npub1nd86x5za0ascfmvmsxqyrzk4xc7l48h6gfmlcf5d3e9munenydys4g2zkd.

Bad news first...

... your naming idea has been claimed by nostr:npub1f9fd738mny4rh95466l75u3raq4t65hcg2zm0qdcc0qgqn7g20lqn0dgxv for his new fediverse messenger app:

https://wedistribute.org/2023/08/sup-by-pixelfed-is-coming/

Good news...

... a lot of what you seem to be proposing is possible right now, by building new apps on top of the existing back-ends of any of the existing ones. This list may be incomplete but its being actively updated and you can browse by language and app types (micro-posting, blog, media-sharing etc);

Most AP servers support the Mastodon C2S API for connecting the web app to the back-end. Some also starting to support the C2S part of the AP spec. Some add bespoke extensions for app-specific features, which needed to eventually have FEPs.

So app devs need to know which C2S dialects a back-end speaks, and make sure their app supports one of those.

> The immutability has a lot of positive or at least neutral use cases as well though

Sure, immutability can be a useful property. But using a database with that property, on an open network (ie the internet), combines badly with allowing it to store enough immutable data to store images. As the CSAM incident shows.

What were the maintainers who allowed image storage on their BlockChain thinking?!?

When I hear Sarah Pallett, the Labour candidate for Ilam, talk about how every little bit helps...

https://theworkinggroup.podbean.com/e/nz-taxpayers-union-and-working-group-election-debates-ilam-christchurch/

... I have to ask, does she honestly expect a standing ovation for a bunch of little bits? From a second term Labour government. After 3 years of having a clear majority to govern alone. They barely deserve a slow clap.

#NZpolitics #Labour #SarahPallett #Ilam

On the other hand, you've got to admire her discipline in defending a policy she may not be very impressed by either.

Because what I was impressed by, later in the debate, was the detail Sarah Pallet was able to go into on justice issues. In a very short time too. This is obviously a policy area she knows well, and is very passionate about.

Given all the space opening up in the front bench, she's one to watch as Labour regroups post-election.

Avert! I wouldn't wish the likely outcome of that on my worst enemies. Imagine the kind of Trumpet the GoP could blow about elitism if the Dems were foolish enough to make that kind of mistake again.

AOC as VP with Warren as the candidate before another Clinton.
